Earliest known 4.5L 350/450 R107 SL! NO RESERVE!

Mercedes made the R107 SL for 18 years. Production began in February 1971 with the euro only 3.5L 350SL. The 4.5L version for the US market commenced four months later. This car is the 47th 4.5L SL made - the earliest I've been able to find.It was made in the second week of 4.5L liter production in June 1971.

Despite the robust nature of these cars, many of the early cars are gone. There are not that many survivors and only a handful of the early cars with serial numbers below 200 still around. As mentioned, this is the 47th car made. We’ve not seen an earlier car offered for sale.I believethat someday soon, as with the Porsche 911 market, the earlycars will be worth a significant premium over later cars.

BODY

Despite the Arizona plates, the previous owner did a bit of rust repair on the bottom. There is probably more work to do and I've not evaluated the rust repair that was done.

Paint is actually pretty decent as I did a full wet sand and polish recently. The car was originally white so if someone was to give it the full restoration it deserved, it should be white over blue.

It had a large spoiler on the back so there are some drilled holes that will need to be filled.

INTERIOR

Seats were redone with cloth at some point in the past. There is a cap on the dash.

Soft top is an old vinyl thing and will need to be replaced.

ENGINE/SUSPENSION

The engine could use a tune up. The transmissionpan gasket should be replaced. I would put in new brake pads. We put brand new tires on the car. They have done 2 miles or so!

I bought it two years ago to use a promotional car for a R107 SL related project. I had intended to restore it but other projects have taken priority. I've decided to pass it on to the next R107 enthusiast. Restored to it glory, or even driven as is, it will be a great talkingpoint at any car show. No one will show up with anything earlier! If you want a really nice SL, this will require a restoration. As the earliest 4.5L SL, I think it deserves it!

Winning bidder will need to arrange for pickup in Belmont, California. I would highly recommendtraileringit ratherthan driving. San Francisco Bay Area traffic is brutal and as its probablydone five miles in three or four years, best notto take a chance driving around here.

For international buyers, we work closely with CFK Rifkens for export to Europe or other international ports. I've sent 8 SLs back to Europe so am very familiarwith the process.

In Summary, the R107 SL is seeing a lot of movement in the market these days. The early cars will get their due soon. Here is a great chance to get a super early car, if not the earliest car still running, at a very, very low entry point. The bumpersalone are worth the openingbid! No Reserve!
