This car is in need of a full restoration and is being sold AS IS, with no warranty express or implied. We acquired the car many years ago and began accumulating parts for it, including a second partial 280SL chassis. We have now lost the steam for doing the restoration. During our ownership, the car has been stored in indoor climate-controlled space, but it was obviously outside and had rust damage before we acquired it. Because of the space it is in, it is difficult/impossible to get decent pictures of the undercarriage and right side.
The vehicle needs full restoration. The engine, transmission and differential are not original to the car. There is rust throughout the car, but many new and used body and structural panels are included. We do not have all of the parts for the car, including the hood and soft top. Please see all of the photos for a better idea of the overall condition.
TITLE: We hold a clear, current title to this car and also a clear title to the second partial chassis. Sale will include a bill of sale plus the two titles. Title transfer must be done within 10 days of possession.
BODY: Complete except hood and soft top. Trunk lid has dents/impact damage. Windshield broken. Rust in typical floor and chassis panels. A factory hardtop is included but will also require a full restoration.
ENGINE: The car was missing its M127 engine, transmission and differential when we bought it. We acquired an upgraded M130 (280 SE/SL) 6 cyl engine for the car and had machine work done to the block and head. Head machined and valves done. The engine and parts have been stored indoors in climate control but have gotten light surface rust and dusty. Block never assembled, but most new, original and reconditioned parts to assemble are present and included. Also parts such as the injection pump, etc. are present, but condition is unknown. We also have a second M130 (280SE) complete engine, which also could be rebuilt or used for additional parts.
TRANSMISSION: We have acquired three automatic transmissions for possible use, but do not know their internal condition. One is tagged as a W113 chassis car (230/250/280SL), one as a W108 (280SE) and the transmission from the second engine tagged 280SE. Recommend rebuild of one or all.
DIFFERENTIAL: Came from the second chassis (1969 280SL). We have not inspected, but rolls under the car. We have a partial driveshaft from this car as well.
SUSPENSION: Complete under the car, but all rubber parts need to be replaced. Also have a second front subframe and another set of front a-arms, etc. Car is a “roller”, but should not be considered drivable without rebuild. Steering gear in place, no shaft or steering wheel in place.
INTERIOR: Basically all missing. There is a pair of seats from a 280SE sedan, but they are not correct to the car. No instruments, gauges, switches, radio or wiring. No upholstery, carpet, chrom, wood trim, etc.
EXTERIOR: Both doors in decent shape. Rear quarters will need typical body prep & paintwork. Front fenders, header panel, etc. are present from second car and have had previous repairs/bodywork. Further repair and installation will be needed. Most exterior chrome missing. We have a few pieces. Hardtop will need full cosmetic restoration.
EXTRA PARTS: Boxes of them. All Mercedes, but some trim and other pieces are likely from W108 280SE sedans as well as W113 SL’s. The SE parts were acquired as several are compatible. All replacement body and structural panels we have are W113.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Be forewarned, one of us is a bit more Mercedes knowledgeable than the other but we will do our best to answer all questions as accurately as possible.
