1966 Mercedes-Benz 300SE Coupe
1966 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series Description
This 1966 Mercedes-Benz 300SE is finished in Papyrus White over black leather and is one of 2,419 W112 coupes produced between 1962 and 1967. According to a Mercedes-Benz internal order dated August 4, 1965 the car was built with option “997,” referred to in the document as “Austellungs Fahrzeug,” meaning it was an exhibition car for dispatch to Daimler Benz North America. It is thought that this car was a display model for the 1966 Detroit Motor Show. Power comes from an injected 3.0-liter M189 inline-six paired with a column-shift 4-speed automatic transmission. The previous owner has lightly restored the car with a refurbished interior, some paintwork, and mechanical work including new brakes, new tires, distributor cap, fuel and oil filters, new fuel pump, and a rebuilt air suspension pump. This 300SE Coupe is now for sale in California with a build sheet, Credent-a-plate, original books, toolkit, and a clean CA title.
The 300SE was based on the W111 chassis and was available as a coupe, convertible, or sedan. Standard features for the more luxurious W112 included air suspension and power steering, as well as an automatic transmission. 14” painted steel wheels wear color-matched Mercedes-Benz star hubcaps and chrome trim rings. A set of new Uniroyal Tiger Paw whitewall tires has been fitted.
This example is equipped with air conditioning, a Becker stereo, and a column-shift automatic transmission. An interior refresh performed by the previous owner included new leather seat covers in the correct pattern sourced from GAHH, a new wool carpet set, and replacement window trim.
The fuel-injected 3.0-liter M189 inline-six was factory rated at 175 horsepower when paired with an automatic transmission. Per the previous owner, the semi-gloss black valve cover, chromed lines and polished inlet manifold were unique features of exhibition-prepped (option code 997) vehicles. Engine bay refinishing was limited to paintwork on the valve cover, power steering reservoir and dipstick.
New brake pads, rotors, and new rear shocks were installed in 2013. 300SE braking was handled by a dual-circuit system with four wheel discs.
