Model range from Mercedes-Benz with the addition of an all-new, turbine-smooth 3.5-liter V-8 powerplant. Styling by design legend Paul Bracq remains a masterpiece that continues to be celebrated today. Refined and luxurious, the 280 SE 3.5 marks one of the last truly hand-built models offered by Mercedes-Benz, replete with leather upholstery and richly finished woodwork. Just 1,232 top-of-the-line 280SE 3.5 Cabriolets were built in total for the 1970-71 model years, including this beautifully restored, preserved and presented example.
Delivered to the United States on April 12, 1970, this stellar Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet is an original U.S. model, sporting Code 571 Red Metallic paint over Code 241 Black leather upholstery, plus a 4-speed automatic gearbox with floor shifter. According to documents supplied by Mercedes-Benz, the long list of rare and desirable factory options included front bucket seats, a Becker Europa stereo radio with power antenna, front folding armrest, air conditioning, power windows, full heat-absorbing glass, whitewall tires, paint protection and more.
While earlier ownership remains unknown at this time, the Mercedes was titled in Florida during 1990 and remained there under single ownership until 2005 when it was acquired by a noted classic car dealer. After a careful search and with the professional advice of Michael McKinney, owner of Glendale, Wisconsins Black Forest Benz, this 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet was acquired by the current owner in January 2006. While the vehicle was indeed complete and drove well, the owner wished to elevate its overall presentation with a comprehensive mechanical restoration by Black Forest Benz. In his quest for perfection, the owner enlisted The Last Detail (after interviewing several shops) to repaint the car and oversee the refurbishment of its brightwork over the winter of 2018-19.
Having undergone only sparing use since restoration and the most recent repaint, this 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet clearly benefits from careful and attentive long-term ownership, plus covered and climate-controlled storage when not in use. Now offered for sale as family priorities dictate, this outstanding Mercedes-Benz icon is accompanied by its factory-issued Zertifikat listing factory data and a specification sheet listing its original equipment and options, plus a copy of the factorys Wagenkarte production record. While having been fastidiously maintained regardless of cost, this 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet has not yet been shown on the concours lawn or entered into any classic touring events, providing an exceptional opportunity for the new owner to enjoy and show it to the fullest as desired.
