1980 Mercedes-Benz 300D diesel 2-door mercedes coupe
1980 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series D Description
1980 Mercedes-Benz 300D (non turbo diesel)
The good:
The car is great mechanically, always starts right away and has been super reliable. The motor runs perfect and the transmission shifts and works great also. When I bought the car it had a bad transmission and had been sitting for a long time so I think the miles are fairly low. I had a transmission put in and replaced the fuel lines because they were leaking. Other than that it hasn't needed anything other than routine oil changes in the couple years I have owned it. Doesn't leak a bit of oil, motor doesn't smoke at all. The driver and passenger seats are both in great shape. The carpets are in good shape also. I put a kenwood mp3 stereo in that works (the becker unit no longer worked). The front windows work great. The sunroof does work but I don't use it, it seems to need to be aligned a little bit and could use some lubrication, I didn't want to chance having it get stuck open. The missing center cap for the driver's side front wheel is in the the glovebox. Tires have a lot of tread on them. The brakes and exhaust are good. Awesome fuel mileage for being a big and heavy car built in 1980! I wouldn't be surprised at all if this car had a few hundred thousand miles left on it, I just have too many vehicles and not enough room. Also, because it's a 1980 diesel there is no smog for this car in California.
The not so great:
Like most Mercedes of this age, the plastic gears have failed in the odometer and it isn't working any more so I'm not sure what the true mileage is. It could really use a paint job, it has started pealing in a couple places and those spots have surface rust. It's not bad yet since it just pealed off but there is one spot on the trunk right under the mercedes emblem where the rust is coming through and would need to be repaired if you wanted to do it right. There is also a hole in the driver side rear wheel well and one in the passenger front wheel well. I am including pics of these areas. The rest of the car seems to be rust free, I just want to make sure to point out those areas. The climate control doesn't work, again seems to be common with these cars. The fan works but I think it needs a replacement control unit. Cruise control doesn't work. The back windows don't go up and down but you can hear the motors working, they seem to be off of the track. The dash has a couple of cracks in it. The back window has some yellowing going on in the bottom right of it, it was like that when I got the car and I'm not sure what caused it, haven't tried to remove it. The top of the back portion of the back seat has some cracks in it from being exposed to the sun for a long time, the bottom portion of the seats is good. The headliner is torn in one place, it's pretty brittle at this point. No spare tire.
