Merceds-Benz: 1988 300 SEL 4-Door Sedan
1988 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series Description
I’ve had this car since 1996 and am only the second owner. It’s been well serviced for 20 years and has NEVER been in an accident. It’s a big, fabulous, classic touring car and still handles the open road beautifully. I’ve recently run from NYC down to Cape May NJ and back, and up and back to Kingston, NY with no problems. City gas mileage is still pretty good too – about 18 mpg best as I can tell.
But now the car needs some work and I’m too old and too distracted to take care of it. It’s an in-line 6, and I believe compression is low in one cylinder, making it tricky to start ((and a little clunky at low speeds)). Depending on where you are located, it may need to be towed or transported. You’ll have to make those arrangements.
Take a look at the photos to help you assess the condition. There are a couple of spots of rust on the exterior of one back door, and some dents, but nothing to take away from its classic sleek appearance. Front bumper surface coating is starting to flake. But overall the exterior is in good condition.
The leather on the outside edge of the driver’s seat is cracking (see photo). But overall the interior is in good condition too. Bucket seats upfront, and a full, wide bench seat in the rear that fits 3 adults comfortably. The wooden console, dashboard and rugs look good. All power windows and the sun roof work, as well as a radio/cd player. The AC went out a while ago, but it seems that happens with older Mercedes.
All 4 tires are in fairly good condition. Truth is recently I’ve only been driving about 3,000 miles a year. The car includes a spare tire, jack, and Mercedes tool set. The title is clear and ready to be transferred.
This Mercedes 300 SEL is a great car – and even at 165,000 miles, with the right new owner it still should have plenty of driving left in it. Hope someone out there is willing to keep it on the road. It would be a shame to send this beauty to the scrap yard! Seems like there are still plenty of this model still on the road. So it’s also probably worth a fair amount if you break it down for parts. But that’s not something I could do.
