1967 Mercury Cougar GT Description

This auction is for a real 1967 Cougar GT 390 4 speed. One family/owner for 50 years. Just 107,000 original miles. I have included a pic of the Marti Report.

This Cougar had a motor issue back in 1982, at that time the owner traded the 390 for another 390 that is in the car now. Motor is only thing not original. 4 speed tranny & rear end are original to the car.

The new 390 was installed in the car & left in storage for 34 years. Original owners son who was 11 when they picked up the car is now 61, decided it was time to get it running & on the streets again. When the dad stored the car in 1982, he pulled it on to a huge sheet of plastic, then wrapped the car completely in the plastic. The son pulled the car out last summer & proceeded to do the following:

All new belts, hoses, all fluids, installed a new clutch, new H pipe, new brakes, drained & cleaned fuel tank, new points, plugs, wires, rebuilt carb. He also added the electronic controller for the rear sequential turn signals. They work great. Front head light doors open fine, the passenger side head light door is a little slow closing.

I purchased this GT from the original owners son & daughter-in-law. Car has spent it’s entire life in the dry, sunny Northwest. Purchased originally on 8/7/1967 at Lou Bell Mercury in Lewiston, Idaho.

The owners son, who was 11 years old at the time was with his dad when they picked the GT up. He told me a funny story about the car. If you look at the Marti report you wheel see that the Cougar came with the Steel styled wheels from the factory. But look at it now, it has 1967 original 14x6 Ford steel wheels & standard Cougar hub caps. The son told the dad that the dealer ship had changed the wheels on the GT. Dads response was that the “MAG” wheels attracted police, so he instructed the dealership to switch the wheels with a hub cap GT. To this day the GT has all 5 original Ford 14x6 wheels & the 4 standard hubcaps, which look almost brand new. I believe the lug nuts are also Ford original that came on the GT 50 years ago.

One other thing you will notice that is not original, back in `67 when he bought it, he must not have been happy with the wheel hop. He went ahead and made a set of homemade traction bars. You can see them in a pic. They look like they have been there for the entire 50 years & are unbelievably strong. They work great! If you don’t like them, it’s a very easy removal to get back to stock.

Owners son also let me know that there was one small accident back in the 70’s, a young girl didn’t stop in time & just clipped the rear right side corner. Very lite hit, you can still see all the original undercoating on the inside of the quarter panel.

The interior is original, the headliner, carpet, seats, dash, all original & in excellent condition. One tear in driver’s seat, that can be repaired. All wiring is excellent, all lights work, wipers work, headlights work, radio works great. Dash pad is perfect. Original carpet & headliner are perfect. Horn is only thing not currently working.

Paint is about 70% original & looks great from about 20 feet. It has its share of door dings, small dent on front of hood, few other small dings, nothing major. Worst part of the paint is the spot they repaired on the right rear quarter. Paint has cracked in that area. One mistake the owners son made when he pulled the car from its 34 year sleep, was he did some touch up with a rattle can on a few spots. Nothing major. Front of the hood had a lot of rock chips, he painted just the front part. He also did a few more spots that had some paint chips.

This Cougar does not have a speck of rust on it. All body panels & floors are original to the car. Zero rust anywhere, one of the nicest 50 year old cars I have ever seen.

Owner removed the bumper guards, & son could not find them, Front bumper is almost perfect, rear bumper has cooper plate showing, will need chrome. No damage. Stainless is all really nice, no pitting anywhere. Glass is all original to the car. All windows work fine. All rubber around windows is also original to the car.

Original owners son drove it a couple hundred miles to work out the bugs, I bought this summer & have put about 500 miles on it. Runs very strong, drips a little but not bad.

I was going to keep it, but I am more into GM cars & found one.

Clear Washington title in my name.
