1981 Mercury Other Description

1981 Jet Electrica (Mercury Lynx)
This is not a conversion. It was factory built at Jet Industries in Austin, TX.
Jet purchased these new from Ford without internal combustion components and built them as electric vehicles. The title states the type of fuel as electric.
This car is a solid runner with simple but durable electric vehicle technology. This car in it's present form is not fast by any means but it is very fun to drive and
is built very well. Lead acid powered EV's are an excellent way to get into electric vehicle technology fairly economically.
The biggest downside to lead battery powered vehicles is the weight from the batteries. They are slow and better suited for flat roads and city driving. A very popular upgrade to these is lithium batteries.
They benefit from much better speed, performance and range. This car would lose approx. 700 lbs with an upgrade to lithium batteries. Another benefit to upgrading lead powered ev's is that the vehicle ev infrastructure is already
in place. It doesn't have to be built from scratch. It would really depend on how involved you wanted to get. It really could be as simple as removing the lead batteries, installing lithium batteries and adding a battery management system.
All the other components could stay in place as they are already compatible.
Most EV components aren't cheap, especially the batteries. I just installed 16 new 6 volt drive batteries and a new 12 volt battery in September of this year. I
also replaced all of the battery interconnects since they were old and some of them were in bad condition. A couple of the pics show both the old and new
interconnects. The new ones have 1/0 cable with copper terminal lugs.
Gas heater and AC systems were removed because of missing parts. I found a compatible 12 volt heater online which could probably be installed into the location of the
previous heater.
