1970 Mercury Monterey Custom Police Interceptor Description

INTRODUCTION AND DESCRIPTION

You are viewing my 1970 Mercury Monterrey Custom. This car, while missing its original engine and transmission (yes, t’s a shame), is aformer Missouri State Highway Patrol, 28 PI (Police Interceptor). The current powertrain is anon-police390 cubic-inch V8 with four-barrel carburetor.

This Monterry Custom otherwise still has the “Interceptor” package and the first 5 digits of the VIN (0Z54PXXXXXX) tell the story: 0 = 1970 Model Year, b>N = Ford’s St. Louis Missouri Assembly Plant, b>54 = Monterrey Custom 4-Door Sedan, nd P = 428 CID (cubic inch displacement), olice, 60 Horsepower, 59 ft. lbs Torque, -4BBL Carburetor, nd a 10:5-1 Compression Ratio.

Key features of this “Interceptor” included: Heavy Duty Transmission =“U” Code, 6 all-aluminum, ne piece case, nbsp;“Police Maximum Handling Package” = Heavy duty suspension parts, ncluding stabilizer bars, prings, nd control arms, nd heavy duty brakes (front discs and self-adjusting rear drums), b>Air Conditioning (system intact but not producing cold air), Heavy Duty Power Disc (Front)/Drum (Rear) Brakes, Heavy duty rear end = 9 3/8 ring gear, .00:1 ratio (open), b>Heavy duty cooling = extra fin-density radiator, hrouded fan that adjusted automatically to cooling demand, nd “Certified” Police Speedometer"= 140 MPH

This Merc has had four owners (including me since 2002) since it was retired fromMSHP service in 1972.Somewhere between 1982 and 1988 its original engine and transmission was lost/harvested.The current 390-4V runs fairly well but I was going to put another engine into it should I wind up keeping it (I have a 1970 460 cubic inch engine..it was rated even higher than the 428-PI that year). It has factory dual exhaust (will require replacement soon).

In 2003, had the vehicle refinished in its original “Medium Blue Metallic” (base coat-clear coat). There was no evidence of rust, ust repair, r damage of any kind noted. The sheet metal, loors, runk pan, rame – everything – were and remain completely rust free.

The interior is original, owever obviously the carpet requires replacement (replacement carpet is due in any day and I will install it or provide it to the new owner for instalation later). The dash is straight and colorfast. The door panels are in very good driver shape. The seats are in very good condition, ut have some discoloration and minor defects around the buttons. The package tray requires replacement. The headliner is original but has a minor tear.

You will need tires before you can do any serious driving or any speed or distance..they are just too old and have some dry-rotting.All electrical systems work, ut the cigarette lighter and radio (original AM unit) do not function. There is no police electrical equipment, xcept for the spotlight (not operating) remaining in the vehicle.

This is a real "P" code Merc Interceptor from 1970 that fortunately still exists but again, nfortunately, ithout its legendary powertrain. And finding a correct 1970 428-PI (essentially a Cobra-Jet) correct for this vehicle may not be a good economic proposition (that engine is worth more than the car potentially). Still, t is rare, ool, nd highly original piece of American history and I hope it finds a good home.

On Feb-20-16 at 11:55:33 PST, eller added the following information:

YES, his Merc has ALL the police-specification equipment it had whenin service, b>EXCEPT the original engine and transmission andthe police electrical equipment.
YES, could collect ALL the 428-PI powertrain parts and re-create a
"correct for the year" engine/transmission. BUT, t still would notbe the exact powertrain from the factoryas it would not"VIN match" the car...and it would be too expensivefor meafter paying peopleto do all that work, plustheacquisition costs for all the hard-parts.
Whole different deal IF I had a 1970 428-PI and C6 laying around..but I dont, b>AND/ORhad the mechanical talent to do the work myself...but I dont.
