1949 CHOPPED MERCURY 2 Door Custom Merc Hotrod Lead Sled 1950 1951
1949 Mercury Other Description
Offered for auction is this 1949 Mercury 2 door coupe. The car is an all steel, custom chopped, and shaved. The car has no fiberglass body parts. Even the skirts (not shown, but included) appear to be original parts. CONDITION:The car is mostly complete, and running, but needs a complete restoration. I purchased the car from an avid rodder and car club president who used the car for advertising his business and restored the car in the early 90s?. He drove the car everyday for years and is now getting rid of all of his toys. The car rides on the original Mercury frame with lowering spindles in the front, front power disc brakes, a V-8 Chevrolet engin, and 3 speed automatic transmission.BODY:The body looks nice from a distance. Again, it was restored and painted 25-30 years ago. The chop was done very well and has slightly angled pillars which are subtle and flow perfectly with the roof line. The body was shaved, frenched and rounded.I have a few copied pictures form the original restoration, but not pulled any paint off to inspect the body. I have not pulled the carpet from the floors, but the rockers and floors appear to have been replaced at some point - as there are no rust holes in the floor that I can see. The trunk floor also appears replaced as there is no spare tire well. Looking inside the doors, both appear to have had a full lower patch panels during the original restoration. Doors open and latch solid. The trunk does not latch. The latch was reportedly removed for an electronic popper that was never installed. It shuts fine and stays down while driving. The hood opens and latches solid, but has a modern style (unoriginal) latch cable under the dash. The lakes pipes and spotlights are for show and non-functional. The car has spots where the paint is fading, cracking, or oxidizing (hood has the worst of it). MOTOR/TRANS:The drivetrain was reported by the last owner to be a 355 (.030 over 350) Chevrolet from an early 70s Nova. It has a mild cam (reportedly the 300hp/327ci cam popular in the 60s). The motor cranks easy and idles the same. The power is probably a little too much for the skinny whitewall tires, as it will cook them off if you throttle it hard. The transmission is reportedly a TH350 3 speed from the same Nova. It leaks transmission fluid when sitting. However, when fluid is correct, it shifts smoothly. Dual exhausts are glass packs and a bit loud when you wrap it up. MECHANICS:The car has a “new” fuel tank (installed, but never had fuel in it), as the left tail pipe was installed in the way of the filler pipe. The last owner added a boat tank in the trunk that currently fuels the engine. I have the filler pipe for the tank (included). The dash gauges do not work. The exterior lights appear to work fine. The wipers assembly was never installed- (included). The front side windows (glass) are out of the car. These are NOT included as I do not have them. However, they are flat glass and can be cut and installed at most any auto glass shop…. Regulators are included. The steering column is not original and the car has NO power steering. This makes it hard to drive for most. I’ve only driven the car through the neighborhood and to the gas station. It was not fun to turn into a parking space. INTERIOR:The interior is obviously NOT original. It had some early 80s Buick seats bolted inside that were dry-rotted and broken. These were removed and I added some black CTS Cadillac 05-07 seats, front and back temporarily for fitting. They will have to be modified and bolted in. They have shoulder belts integrated into the front seats. The console is a late 90s Cadillac unit just sitting loose on the floor. I have the matching floor shifter for the console (included). The door panels, front and rear quarter trim panels are included, but not installed. They appear to be grey vinyl with an older pleated roll pattern. The side interior window trims are included (but not installed). They are chopped and painted the blue body color. The front interior window trim is included (but not installed). The front windshield trim has NOT been chopped, but looks to have been painted white to prevent rust. The sill plates for the carpet are new (never installed), polished stainless steel, and included, but not installed. TITLE:Car has clear Mississippi title in hand. Car has unknown actual mileage. FULL DISCLOSURE:This is a COMPLETE RESTORATION project. This car will need to be towed or trailered any kind of distance. Car is being sold AS-IS & where-is. NO Warranty is expressed or implied. Please study the pictures. I will try to include some of the old copies of the original restoration pictures that the last owner provided me. I described and photographed the vehicle to the best of my knowledge. Your bid is your offer to purchase, NOT to “inspect and decide once the auction is over”. You are welcome (and ENCOURAGED) to come look at the car prior to bidding. The car is NOT insured and will not leave my home for a “joy- ride”, until it is paid for. If you are in the market for this kind of project, you understand the process. I do NOT disclose any reserve on an auction. This is part of an auction process and is unfair for other bidders. I do not have a Buy-it-Now price; so please don't ask. If you believe that you will spend what the market will set, make a bid or send an offer.
