Very rarely are you able to acquire a classic car that was built by a legend in the industry - one of the premier artists & designers of our time. When the chance comes around to purchase a car with such amazing history, you better grab it while you have the opportunity. Well folks, here is your chance! 'Red Hills Rods & Classics', is very proud to present to you Max Grundy’s 1950 Mercury Coupe, one of the most recognized and certainly one of the most unique Chopped Coupes on the planet! If you are involved with automotive art & culture, you are certainly familiar w/ Max Grundy, who’s all-new automotive special recently premiered on ‘Discovery Channel’ this past November to rave reviews. His artwork & design style is one-of-a-kind and extremely unique. This 1950 Mercury Coupe is very well known worldwide and its history is very special indeed. After sitting in a field in Idaho since the early 1960’s, painter/illustrator/graphic designer Max Grundy, acquired this the Mercury Coupe, and started what was to become a 13 year venture of building his ‘dream’ car. He was 19 years old at the time, and always dreamed of building a custom Mercury, as his father had done when Max was just a little boy. When he first got the Merc, it had very faint lettering on the jockey box that read ‘Lonely Boy’, a name that stuck, hence the cool logo with the candle burning at both ends. Anyway, Max, with the help of his father and brother, started chipping away at the Merc immediately after getting it home, but there was only so much they could do with their limited experience, so it was decided to take the Merc to Bo Huff in Dragerton, Utah to get the body work started. After Bo did the initial chop, it sat in Max’s parents garage in Utah for another five years before Max brought it back to Southern California to finish what he had started. Max took his Merc to Aaron Valencia, who completed the bodywork and along w/ Max, turned Max’s car into one of the meanest Kustom Mercs on the planet! She was chopped 5.5”, nosed, decked, everything was shaved, and ’54 Ford frenched headlights were added. She was then finished in an ultra-cool shade of Military Matte Green, which gives this car that ominous appearance like no other. Pop open the door and you immediately notice that the Military vibe carries over into the interior, with the bench seat finished in an Army brown style w/ Battleship Grey dash & upper doorframes. If you’ve ever seen Max Grundy’s work, then you know that much of his art has a WWII theme, which he carried over while designing this 1950 Mercury Coupe. The interior qualities match the exterior perfectly, with its colors & design very much thought out ahead of time. The Battleship Grey dash was customized beautifully and has an aircraft feel that is impossible to deny. Interior features include: full set of Classic Instruments gauges, Aircraft type switches & Riveted Panels, ’55 Ford Steering Wheel, Hand-Built Steering Column, Genie 23” Shifter w/ Custom Shift Knob, Original Heater (functional) and ‘Lonely Boy’ logo artwork on glove box. Again, the interior matches the one-of-a-kind exterior perfectly. All of the gauges, lights, blinkers, etc., are in perfect working order. Sitting on a 1972 Pontiac GTO chassis, w/ GTO suspension, steering & brakes, this Mercury Coupe drives like a dream! a 400ci SBC motor featuring: Cal-Custom Finned Valve Covers, Chrome Block Hugger Headers, Cadillac Air Cleaner, Edelbrock Intake Manifold, Edelbrock 600 cfm Carburetor, Chrome Alternator and custom built Aluminum Radiator w/ Dual Fans, she performs as good as she looks! The 400 SBC is linked to a TH400 3-Speed Automatic Transmission which shifts super smooth & crisp with no unwanted noises whatsoever. She fires up instantly, settling into a nice smooth idle, and she runs & drives beautifully in every way. The 400ci SBC provides plenty of power & torque, making the car is an absolute BLAST to drive, and the lake pipes are completely functional & sound incredible! In fact, if you look at the Mooneyes Catalog, you will find the ‘Lonely Boy’ featured in the lake pipe section. This Merc also has the perfect stance, sitting on 15” steel wheels with Mooneyes Starburst Discs wrapped in Coker Classic Whitewall tires. Of course, she’s got an Air Ride system in the rear, so you can completely control where you want her to sit at all times. From any angle, whether it’s day or night, this Chopped Merc looks perfect, period. This is a very rare opportunity to own a very special 1950 Mercury Coupe that has been owned and customized by some of the biggest names in the Kustom Kulture world.
