When the 7th generation Cougars hit the showrooms, even Mustang guys started looking over their shoulders. And this clean 25th Anniversary 1992 Mercury Cougar represents the pinnacle of the breed, a car that combines pedigree, luxury, and modern muscle car performance, all complements of the venerable 5.0L High-Output V8. Don't knock it until you've tried it, this is a very special car! The "Aerocats" were a love-it-or-hate-it proposition, but I, for one, always admired their smooth good... looks. Not in-your-face like the Mustang, or quite as mulleted as the Thunderbird, the Cougar was for someone who had outgrown his boy racer instincts but still wanted to turn tires into expensive smoke. Tourmaline Green was the only color that came on the special edition 25th anniversary car, and for those of you who know what it is, it's a very special find. The finish shines up very well for its age and this generation's design is arguably the best of all, with slender headlights, a bold front fascia, and a special issue luggage rack that gave the Cougar a far more sophisticated look. And for a car that just passed its 27th birthday, it's in really good shape, with only modest signs of use and age, nice trim that hasn't been baked by the sun, and paint that looks better than it should for its age. Obviously, this car has always been treated as something special and it's ready to either continue having fun or go to the next level and get full-blown preserved. If you've always wanted one, this is a great place to start! The 25th Anniversary interior gets a bit more serious about comfort and style, with Mocha Tan leather and Ultrasuede upholstery with contrasting green carpets, gusseting, and seat piping. Special issue floor mats with the 25th Anniversary emblem stitched on them were part of the package as well, and this Cougar remarkably still retains them after all these years. The Cougar got heavily bolstered power buckets for driver and passenger, and they definitely work to hold you in place. Furthermore, the upholstery is in great shape with only a few signs of wear, mainly on the high-traffic side bolsters. The beautiful green carpets are still plush and door panels (replete with special issue leather door accents for the 25th) look similarly fresh, again suggesting that this car has been maintained, not simply owned. Everything was standard on the Cougar, including power windows and locks, A/C, cruise control, and a tilt steering column, plus a full array of gauges keep an eye on all the engine's vitals. There's also a decent-sounding premium sound system with cassette player, and the Cougar has a positively giant trunk compared to its Mustang cousins. The famous 5.0L HO delivered V8 grunt that out-performed most American-made motors of the era and pulls this big 2-door coupe with snapping ease. It remains bone stock, but you'll find stock is plenty entertaining on the street, with acceleration available anywhere on the tach and full pop on tap before you can even get your foot to the floor. The engine bay is quite clean, more evidence of a good life, and it's nice to see one that hasn't been modified. Paired with a slick-shifting AOD 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission, the Cougar is a peerless high-speed cruiser and a formidable car on twisty roads, where the athletic all-independent suspension can really go to work. Add in factory 4-wheel disc brakes, performance 3.08 gears, and a burbling dual exhaust system, and suddenly this car makes a 5.0 Mustang look pretty basic. Unique 15-inch spoke BBS wheels with hexagonal center caps were fitted on all 25th Anniversary Cougars, and these look fantastic and carry 215/70/15 performance radials. For you Ford-Lincoln-Mercury performance guys who grew up in the '80s and early '90s, you know this is a special car. Everyone else, take notice, because this rare limited edition Cougar is the biggest performance bang for the buck in our showroom. Only 5,000 were ever believed to be made, so this may be the only chance you have to snag this modern collector car. Call now!
