1964 Mercury Comet race car project
1964 Mercury Comet 202 post coupe Description
1964 Mercury Comet post coupe drag race project for sale. I began building this car for Super Street bracket racing about 8 years ago. Five years ago I lost my shop lease due to health reasons and the car has been living under a tarp on a trailer ever since. My health isn't going to improve and I'll never finish this project so it's time to give someone else a crack at it before the elements claim it. The parts are too numerous to describe in detail but here is some information in general: I started with a nice 6 cylinder automatic two door coupe with no rust. In fact, the only "used" parts on the entire project are the original sheet metal, glass, mirrors, door/window hardware and a 385 series engine block. Everything else is new. The motor is a 460 Ford stroked to 514 C.I. with a Bryant crank, Crower rods, Diamond pistons, Crane gold roller rockers, Jomar rocker stud girdles, Competition Cams flat tappet mechanical cam, Edelbrock Victor intake manifold and Demon 1050 cfm annular booster carburetor. The crowning glories are the Jon Kaase Stage II ported Super Cobrajet heads. Compression is just a bit over 13.5 to 1. 2 1/8" headers were custom fabricated and ceramic coated. Miscellaneous under hood parts include an East Coast racing alternator, Canton valve covers and oil pan, Aerospace Components vacuum pump, Be Kool racing radiator, electric fan, Meziere electric water pump, Danny Bee cam belt drive, MSD distributor and a Masterlube pre-oiler. The machine work and long block assembly were by O'neil's Custom engines in Spokane, WA; all internal parts were sourced through Jon Kaase Racing. The motor has never been started; in fact, the intake hasn't been port matched to the heads and the intake has never been torqued down.
The transmission is a bullet-proof, reverse manual valve body C-6 assembled by Bill Smith. A carbon fiber explosion shield is included and the the shifter is a co2 solenoid modified Turbo Action Cheetah unit. The front suspension is a Rod & Custom Motorsport adjustable coil over system with disc brakes. The rear suspension is a ladder bar back half by Art Morrison with Eagle adjustable coil overs and a Strange Engineering 9" rear axle with 4:56 to 1 gears and an Eaton Truetrac differential. the roll cage was custom fabricated. A very complete set of Autometer gauges is included as is a Painless race car wiring system. A Dedenbear delay box and an MSD 7 series ignition are mounted in the cab. Please note: THE WIRING, BRAKE PLUMBING, AND FUEL PLUMBING ARE ENTIRELY INCOMPLETE. Fiberglass front fenders, front bumper, hood and rear deck lid are by Crites. Sheet metal work in the trunk and cabin are complete.
The tires, while never used, are completely shot. In fact, I'm not going to try to air them up to get the car off of this trailer and on to someone else's trailer so I'm throwing in the trailer with the deal! It is a two axle unit complete with a Smittybilt 8,000 lb. winch and 2 5/16" ball hitch. If you want the car, bring a truck with the right hitch, hook it up and go. The electric plug is a flat four configuration.
To summarize: this is a nice car that deserves to be finished and raced. The "buy it now" price is about what I've got into the motor alone, so it's a pretty good deal if you're looking to get into racing. As mentioned, all performance parts were purchased new and have never been used. If you are interested but have questions, contact me through Ebay and leave a phone number; I'm more than happy to call and answer your questions.
A FINAL BIT OF INFORMATION: WHEN I PURCHASED THE CAR I WAS GIVEN A CLEAN MONTANA TITLE BUT HAVE NO IDEA WHERE IT ENDED UP SO I CAN ONLY PROVIDE A BILL OF SALE. I hope the lack of a title isn't a deal breaker.
A $500 PayPal deposit is required within 48 hours of the close of bidding with the balance being due within seven days. Methods of payment are wire transfer, personal check or cash. If the winning bidder writes a personal check, the car will not be released until the check clears my bank. Thanks for looking!
