In 1968 the Mercury Cyclone was on top of the world, winning the Daytona 500 from the pole with Cale Yarborough at the helm. While that was more than 50 years ago, the model looks as good now as it did back then. But the Cyclone has become somewhat rare today and finding one can be a challenge, especially if you want something as nice as this restored example and its 302-4v engine, automatic transmission, front disc brakes, and factory air conditioning.
This 1968 Cyclone underwent a full restoration ending in 2009 and received additional updates in 2019. It has a straight, rust-free body with high quality Augusta Green paint and yellow striping. I think it’s a great color combination for this car and something you don’t see every day. The underside looks very nice as well and as the pictures show, it doesn’t hide anything. The attractive 15” styled steel wheels have new BF Goodrich white letter tires (215 front, 235 rear).
The engine is a rebuilt 302 that uses a replacement short block with rebuilt Hi-Po heads. The hydraulic camshaft is from Competition Cams. The Ford (yes Ford!) aluminum intake manifold is topped by a Holley 4-barrel carburetor with electric choke. There is also a Pertronix electronic ignition. Backing the engine is a C4 automatic transmission with a shift kit. The rear end was just rebuilt and houses a limited slip differential with 3.00:1 gears for good highway driving.
The front brakes were recently converted to discs (all original parts included). The rear drums, shoes, and wheel cylinders are all new as well. The power steering has a new control valve and pump. There is an aluminum high capacity radiator and dual welded exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers. The car also handles nicely with KYB shocks and a heavy duty front sway bar.
The interior was redone and features the correct factory black vinyl upholstery with bucket seats and deluxe seat belts. The dash is a very clean design with the five instrument pods and woodgrain finish, and it flows nicely into the factory center console. The wood rimmed steering wheel looks right at home as well. The sound system uses a Sony radio / CD / Bluetooth head unit in the glove box along with new speakers. And of course there is the factory style “Whisperaire” air conditioning that also works. All other items function properly except the clock.
The Mercury Cyclone remains a special car. When is the last time you saw one of these at a car show? This example also includes an original window sticker, build sheet, Marti report (showing it as a 1-of-1 build) and a complete set of manuals. It is complete and turn-key, needing nothing but a new home.
