1938 MG VA -- Description

MG produced the VA, originally marketed as the MG 1.5 Liter, from 1937 through 1939.In total, there were only 2,407 produced across three body styles, the rarest being the four-passenger tourer.Powering the car was a tuned version of the push rod, overhead valve four-cylinder Morris TPBG type engine that was also found in the Wolseley 12/48 and Morris 12.The MG version was given twin SU carburetors and produced 54 horsepower at 4500 RPM. It came equipped with a four-speed manual... gearbox with synchromesh on the top three ratios. The VA rode on nineteen inch wire wheels and was kept in the drivers control through 10-inch drum brakes that were hydraulically operated using a Lockheed system. Suspension was by half elliptic springs with a live rear axle and a beam front axle setup. This very well preserved VA Tourer was purchased by the consignor with the intent to undertake a full restoration. However, once we received the car in our shop, it quickly became apparent that the car was in too good of a condition to restore. All of the wood is original and very solid. The original chassis and body are rust free and car has its original 1.5 liter engine and four speed manual transmission. The car was owned privately in Florida until approximately 1995 when it was sold to a prominent Mississippi museum where it would reside until earlier this year. No effort has been made to make the car run but a general cleanup of the car was performed including treating the seats and bringing the leather completely back to life. This is an ideal touring car as it offers sufficient power and comfort to keep up with modern day cars and yet, has the classic MG styling of the 1930's that make the car unique. The car has a replacement correct style top and side curtains.
