1933 MG J2 Midget Description

1933 MG J2 Midget: An amazing survivor

Offering what could easily be the most unmolested, genuine, low mileage, roadworthy J2 in existence. The guarantee plate for car # 4149 fitted with engine # 2746AJ was issued on October 16, 1933. This example was originally owned by a French motor racing enthusiast living in Casa Blanca, Morocco, and still wears its original Moroccan plates as well as the hand painted registration on the original backing plate, attesting to the fact that this is the genuine original registration.

This car has never been dismantled and is totally rust free with all original wood completely intact (excepting floorboards) Surviving swept wing J2’s are a comparative rarity, as all later spec J2’s were originally fitted with trend setting swept wings and accounted for just over 30 % of the total production of 2,083 cars. Today, many late J2’s are fitted with incorrect cycle wings as a less expensive alternative to restoring badly deteriorated originals.

The full history of this car is well documented, but the short version is that the original owner lost an arm in a motor racing accident in 1936 ( in another car), laid up the J2 but kept it in Casa Blanca till his passing in 1965. The 2nd owner was also a Frenchman and after a few years sold it to the first American who was working in Morocco. The 4th owner was well known MG exponent, Jim Krekovich, who acquired the car in 1978 while still in completely original untouched condition and still shod in pre-‘36 French Dunlop’s. Jim carried out a very sympathetic minimalist restoration preserving as much of the original patina as possible. Much of the chrome plated surfaces are still original and the entire rolling chassis has never been dismantled or repainted. The current owner acquired the car in 1994 and immediately road registered the car for the first time since 1936. He has carefully preserved patina while carefully enhancing the usability of the car. New wiring, clutch and tires plus ongoing “fettling” has kept the car reliable and fun to drive. The rare and genuine Auster racing screen is a testament to the sporting intentions of the original owner.

The current owner completely retrimmed the interior around a new Mike Collingburn set of truly correct leather seats. The car is still fitted with the original and functioning Euro spec kilometer speedo/tack showing 62,649 KM ( 38,928 miles) believed to be genuine, together with French spec amber headlight bulbs (new clear bulbs to be supplied). The engine has great oil pressure and runs well but would benefit from a full rebuild if serious road use is intended. The gearbox shifts and performs “like new”. The nearly 40 year old paint shows honest wear and patina. Top frame is fitted but weather equipment is not included. Full documentation, Moroccan and California titles and extensive records to be included.
