It is still titled on the 1979 Missouri title and only has 82,531 actual miles since new. Made in Oldsmobile’s Lansing, Michigan factory (VIN code M) during the third week of March 1979, this example was shipped to Noel Bianco Oldsmobile in St. Louis, Missouri and its original owner bought it on April 9, 1979 with 9 miles on the odometer. The original owner had a full tune-up performed in 2017, new fuel pump, belts, heater hoses, radiator repair and brake hoses. Documentation include the original owner’s manual, delivery paperwork and the original 1982 Missouri registration and inspectionThis Cutlass Supreme is finished in its original Dark Brown Metallic (code 69) paint. Overall, the paint and trim are in very good order for original paint, but the car exhibits paint blemishes visible at close range. The car has rally, bullet-style sideview mirrors. The bodywork is straight and the undercarriage is tidy, the original engine bay is extremely tidy and the Super Start battery appears new. In addition, the car has a Schumacher 1.5-amp on-board charger and maintainer and the original owner put in a new battery. The car’s wraparound chrome bumpers are in overall good, original order. This Cutlass rolls on Uniroyal Tiger Paw white stripe radials, size P195/75R14 at every corner. Each tire is mounted to a factory, color-keyed Honeycomb rally wheel. The tires are in very good condition while the wheels are in great shape. Under that counterbalanced hood is Oldsmobile’s 260 CID V-8 engine (VIN code F and engine code LV8). Conceived as an economy measure, it was the first up-level option over the base Buick 231 V-6 engine found standard in several Oldsmobiles of this period. While the 260s were not powerful compared to the larger 350 and 403 V-8s, fuel economy was almost as good as the base V-6. Compared to the 231, the 260 generated more torque and smoother-running. The engine is linked to a Turbo Hydramatic 200 three-speed automatic transmission with a 2.93:1 rear end. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, power steering and power brakes.Inside, the Camel Tan cloth and vinyl interior (code 62), is in good, original order. The split-front bench seat with fold-down center armrest is in very good shape, as is the rear bench. The matching carpet is in satisfactory shape, as is the two-spoke steering wheel and matching instrument panel. The inner door panels look great while the column-mounted shifter looks good. Extras in this car are a Uniden Citizens’ Band radio mounted under the dash, a period correct Uniden Superhet RD 35 radar detector on top and a Micronta tachometer/clock combination mounted in the dash. An aftermarket AM/FM radio with a cassette deck completes the interior.Cosmetically, the 1978 Cutlass Supreme line continued through 1979 with only slight changes front and rear. A bewildering array of grilles were used on the different equipment levels for 1978 and 1979, including two sets each of slotted (Salon), waterfall (Supreme including Brougham) and egg crate (Calais) style designs.Competition to this Cutlass in 1979 included Buick’s Regal, Chevrolet’s Monte Carlo, Chrysler’s Cordoba, Datsun’s 200SX, Dodge’s Mirada, Ford’s Thunderbird, Honda’s Prelude, Mercury’s Cougar, Pontiac’s Grand Prix and Toyota’s Celica.Cutlass sales accounted for more than 50 percent (more than 536,000 units) of the more than one million Oldsmobiles sold in 1979, with the Cutlass Supreme comprising more than four-fifths of those 536,000+ units.Documentation include the original owner’s manual and assorted, related paperwork. If you’re looking to dive into the collectible car universe, this ’79 Cutlass is the perfect entry portal for your new hobby.
