If you are looking at the W123 and specifically the 300D, then you know a little about the reliability of these cars. Here is why you would want to pick up my car.
1. 184K mile, it's been my daily driver since 2012 and I have detailed maintenance records (hand written) dating back to when the car was new. This car will do another 100K miles easily. (will need to record exact miles at point of sale)
2. The car runs really really really well. It has great engine compression. I do preventative maintenance and the engine is super strong for a 300D. There are a few tricks to making these Mercedes Diesel engines run well and this car has them all.
3. Everything works! I paid the Mercedes dealer in Arlington to convert the AC from R12 to modern standard. The locks, windows, sunroof, radio, and pretty much everything else in the car works. I've even upgraded the headlights so you can actually see and be seen at night. It has a nearly new set of Michelin Defender tires.
3. 1985 is the last year they made this model of 300D. Mercedes put a better geared transmission in this model only, so you can comfortably cruise all day long at 80MPH. I've made a half dozen 500+ mile trips in the past year and the car is amazing on the highway.
4. The gas mileage!!! I average 26MPG combined city and highway driving. On road trips I consistently get between 29-32MPG from a tank including stops for supplies...and you will need to stop before the car does.
5. I consistently do valve adjustments every 12K miles. That's right, if you are shopping for one of the older Mercedes Diesel cars and the owner doesn't know that the valves need to be adjusted, and it hasn't been done in 10 years, just walk away...
So there are some of the reasons why you'd want this car over another 300D.So here is what needs some work and it's a pretty short list:There is rust around the jack points and rear quarter panels. See photos. The exhaust is rusted and needs replacement ($300ish)The AC has a tiny leak that requires it to be charged every year or so. That bottle to fill it is $10, or you can fix the leak.Almost all 300D cars develop a leak in the oil pressure gauge. I have put in an auxiliary gauge just below the dash.Radio Antenna doesn't go up and down anymore.. Car is sold AS IS and WHERE IS with absolutely no warranty.Purchaser is responsible for all shipping logisitcs and payment.Vehicle must be picked up within 10 business days of purchase.Don't buy it unless you've asked all the questions necessary to make a purchase decision.
