Rare 1970 VW Transporter Dormobile Bus Camper Type 2 RV Volkswagen One Owner!
1970 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon Dormobile Description
Here is our one owner 1970 VW Transporter Dormobile. This is about as rare as they get in the USA. My Father ordered and collected this at the factory in Germany in 1970. These are NOT Westfalia campers and are really not found in the USA. This van has been around the world with Army postings in Germany, Okinawa, Korea, and California. There are tons of stories and lots to talk about but here are the highlights:
Side raising Dormobile roof with 4 Glass moonroof windows and classic candy cane material.
New Engine with dual port upgrade for more power (only a few hundred break in miles)
European Mountain gearbox with shorter gears for climbing hills (factory ordered)
Camper module which is on wheels so it can be pulled out for more room (Dormobile)
Dual overhead bunks and full bed down below as well.
Bucket seat conversion in front
Arctic winter gas fired heater
California shaved nose conversion
3-point retractable seat belts
Rear right and left 'service' doors mod.
Tons of records since new and lots and lots of spares...
The bad:
My Father had a stroke and as such the VW has sat for 3 years in California. The engine runs fine as it is new, but the lack of use has gotten things out of sorts. She has a sticky throttle cable for one. It would not take much to get her on the road but she is not there right now. The last time she was in use, my Father said he thought the transmission was going to need freshening in the future (one gear was making some light whine). There is some rust where there was an antenna in the nose and some bubbling at the bottom of the windshield gasket. There is more in the rockers at the rear fenders. All of the rust on the outside is not through the metal save the old antenna hole. The paint job was not the best and you will want to re-spray it at some point. The bottom has some minor rust but it is not through body rot or anything like that. It will need a clean up and spray some undercoat on it. There is no rust in the floors anywhere. The wiring harness was modified to make the VW DOT legal and it has been a source of frustration in the past. We bought a new harness for it, and it just needs to be installed. In fact we have most of the restoration parts in boxes, what we dont have is time. My work is taking me away for a few months so I need to give up on some of my projects. I would love to keep her but I just cant do it all right now.
Ask any questions, the starting price is a bargain and more than fair for such a rare one owner VW Dormobile. We have more pics of the rust and such if desired.
