1959 California Special - One-Off Sports Car
Very attractive styling for a hand-crafted one-off from California. Designed and built by a sports car enthusiast in the late 1950s in Sacramento, California, this Crosley based special was kept by its original builder/owner throughout his life and was sold after his passing. The wheelbase is small - approximately 80 inches in length. The track is approximately 46 inches wide. The engine/transmission are Crosley and are untested.
Although the majority of the work has been completed, this sports car was never fully finished. Dash, gauges, wiring and other issues that can be seen need to be completed which gives the new owner of this sports car an opportunity to complete it to their liking. This could be finished as a sports car or race car. This car would make an excellent vintage small-bore race car.
American Sport Specials are coming into their own. More and more they are seen at vintage races, rallys, tours and on the fields of the finest concours in the world. Most recently a class of these sports cars appeared at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and the 2015 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. This may be your chance to own something quite rare - an American Special -- with all the flair of European design, but with American power and at a reasonable cost.
