1989 Other Makes 1989 Merkur XR4TI 138,000 miles 2.3L Turbo Manual Description

Up for sale is my 1989 Merkur XR4TI. 1989 was the last year of the XR4TI, which makes it quite the rare car, less than 3,000 were produced. As can quickly be seen this particular one has seen better days. It does run and drive and I've driven it around for the past couple months without any problems. That being said it does need some work.
Mechanically: The engine starts right up and it shifts well. The clutch seems ok, but on deceleration there is quite the loud engine braking sound, which I'm not used to. If you put the clutch in it goes away. It is a bit zippy and the turbo does help the acceleration. The engine does have a few very slow oil leaks, one around the valve covers, the other on the oil pan. Also I believe it needs new ball joints in the front, and could use some new shocks and tires (the rear driver tire has a slow leak).
Interior: The leather is worn through on the driver seat. The passenger and back seat are in OK shape. The sunroof works fine and isn't leaking. The radio worksintermittently. Also the rear driver side window seal has been rigged together with a piece of leather and some rivets (very odd). The carpet is in good shape. Also a light cover needs replaced above the rear view mirror.
Exterior: It is painted a few different shades of red, which can be seen in the pictures. However it is almost rust free. There is a slight amount of rust starting around the rear wheel wells, but otherwise the body doesn't have much rust at all (the car is NOT originally from Iowa). It obviously needs to be repainted, but wouldn't need a ton of body work done.
Overall this is a rare car that needs quite a bit of tlc. This will never be a perfect vehicle but it could make an interesting project car if you're up to it. I wouldn't advise driving it across country, but I have driven it a few hours without any problems. If you want to take a look at the car before bidding just contact me through eBay and we'll set up a time. Feel free to ask any questions and take a look at all the pictures.

I added a few more pictures, so you can better see the inside of the car, including with the seat covers off. Also the AC does work, along with the power locks, windows and cruise control. The electronic car display (above the radio) works on occasion.
