The development of a new Gorkovsky Avto Zavod (or: GAZ) vehicle that would eventually be called a Volga GAZ-21 started in early 1950s. To produce a competitive modern vehicle and be in par with the latest automotive trends, GAZ purchased several foreign vehicles for research purposes. Among those were two 1954 Ford Mainline, a 1953 Chevrolet 210, a 1953 Plymouth Savoy, a 1952 Kaiser Henry J, and a 1952 Standard Vanguard. There have been 3 generations of GAZ-21. This 1968 Volga belongs to the last and most numerous third generation of GAZ-21 (1962-1970). It has a 2,4 liter 4 cylinder 75-hp overhead-valve engine.
