1967 Cobra 427 Roadster
Cobra enthusiasts don't have to look very hard to find a great variety of components and aftermarket choices and support. Unfortunately, the amount of time and money involved in vetting those parts and building a ground-up custom becomes simply mind-boggling. Enthusiasts sometimes spend years writing check after check to shop after shop creating a car that, by the time it's finished, some of them don't even want.
For consignment a completed project and done nicely to boot! Contemporary Classic Cobra provided the kit in the form of the body and a 4-inch round tubular frame as per the original. Well thought out suspension, and original Cobra like instrumentation layout are some other highlights. Throw in some heavy hitting power, a Borg Warner T5 5-speed and I can smell the rubber burning and we haven't even twisted the ignition.
Exterior
Molded fiberglass sprayed with Ford Ultra Blue shows on this accurate body which is to emulate a street version Cobra. There is a splitter bar in the grille, a hood scoop and full bumper. Throw on a high luster finish, and put your sunglasses on because this thing is gonna glow at night with a full moon...Hoooooowwwwwl! As per the body upon close inspection there are scratches in the rear fender from previous sanding in this area, and some slight wavy-ness is noted on the front fenders where they meet the top of the car. A few scratches in the finish are seen mostly towards the back of this car. All exterior chrome and trimmings are very nice and shiny. 15-inch knockoff wheels are on all 4 corners and are wrapped with 235/65R15's on front, and 295/50R15's on back. I'm searching for the nearest winding back road that the po-po would never even think of patrolling.
Interior
Swing open the gray leather paneled door with pleated storage, climb behind the wood Cobra emblemed wheel, and stare upon a profusion of gauges and switches embedded within a gray padded dashboard that are sure to be enough to distract you just momentarily from the upcoming 35MPH curve. It is also very reminiscent of the original Cobra gauge layout. Gray carpet floods the floor, all covered by carpet floor mats are thick enough to remove your shoes and squiggle your toes in them. Remind yourself you are securely fastened into the simple gray leather clad bomber style buckets with blue wide harnesses and just a hint of maroon piping for the highlighted edges. Push the edge on the G- forces to come.
Drivetrain
'Keep it simple' is a good philosophy when it comes to performance and reliability. And the builders of this clean classic did just that with a 1967 Ford 351ci Windsor V8 which was blue printed, balanced, and built by Engine Research in Georgia. A build sheet notes that aftermarket Ford SVO Aluminum heads are now on either side, and a 4bbl Holley site atop an Edelbrock intake manifold. On back is a 5-speed manual transmission ( Borg Warner-T5)
Undercarriage
A little patina, and solid framing and floorpans, engine supports and drivetrain are all present and accounted for and ready to perform for you. Front torsion bar suspension is now on, and Jag rear IRS quad coil-over suspension on back. Wilwood front disc brakes are on and standard disc brakes on back, although they reside inboard right next to the pumpkin. Also noted is a full-on stainless-steel exhaust system (tailpipe).
Drive-Ability
As a street car setup, the interior is well appointed and comfy. This classic repro fired right up and off on the test track it performed beautifully. Good raw power, excellent handling courtesy Jaguar, and bias free panic stopping. All functions were working well, and it is a truly fun driver and of course head turner.
With its correct color you can harken back to the glory days of Ford racing and the antics of Carrol Shelby which produced results. His tenuous relationship with FORD brass was legendary, that even movies were made of it! Here we have a nice repro, excellent comfy interior and in street format. No roll-bar, no side pipes, just a fun driver and open to the air and winding roads...bring it on!!
