Miniature Swiss Army Vehicle in Good Unrestored Original Condition
1962 Other Makes Steyr-Puch Haflinger Description
Offered for sale here is a well maintained 1962 Steyr-Puch Haflinger ex-Swiss Army military vehicle in good unrestored original condition.
Steyr-Puch is a long established Autrian vehicle manufacturer. They produced their first vehicle in 1915 and continue to manufacture military vehicles today as a division of General Dynamics. They introduced their first four-wheel drive vehicle, the Haflinger, in 1959. It was very advanced for its time, incorporating features such as fully independent long travel suspension, shift-on-the-fly four wheel drive, lock-on-the-fly front and rear differentials, an ultra low crawler gear ratio, and portal axles (where the drive shaft enters the top of the hub and drives the wheel via a drop gear). The result is a vehicle that combines low weight with high load capacity and exceptional off-road ability.
This particular example is the much sought after Swiss Armyspec. The Swiss Army auctioned off the last of these years ago and they are now increasing difficult to come by. Do not be fooled by the toy like appearance: this is a genuine military vehicle built to full military specifications. Haflingers were used by the Swiss Army primarily as command and control vehicles and mobile rocket launcher platforms. Having said that, Idon't think the Swiss have actually been at war with anyone recently. Some specific details are as follows:
Engine:643cc horizontally opposed twin, 24hpVehicle Length:112"Vehicle Width:53"Wheelbase:59"Ground Clearance:10"Fording Depth:16"Approach & Departure Angles:45 degreesUnladen Weight:1300 lbsGross Vehicle Weight:2400 lbsMaximum Speed:45 mph
This vehicle has been well maintained throughout its entire life. There are a few minor dings and scratches on the bed, and a little surface rust around the hinges to the rear seat well covers. There are no bullet holes (see comment on the Swiss above). The only known fault is thefront driver's side cv joint boot, which is torn (see photo). The replacement boot is easily obtained, but I hear the jobitself is a pain (which is why I've never tackled it). You willalso see in the photos that the seat backs are not currently attached. The rubber straps that secure them rotted. Replacements havebeen sourced and will be installed before the new owner takes delivery. You may also notice in the photo of the engine bay that the bootconnecting the air filter housings has rotted. A replacement for this has been sourced and will also be installed prior to delivery. All remaining features of the vehicle are in excellent working order: All mechanical, four-wheel drive and electrical systems are fully functional. The engine fires up immediately, runs smoothly and pulls well throughout the rev range. Clutch, brakes and transmission all work perfectly. Tires are off-road type, and are in good condition with decent tread remaining. All the desirable military spec add-ons are present and correct (tire chains, spare tire, spare gas tank, tool kit, resettable breaker-type fuses, rifle holders, etc.). New spark plugs (correct waterproof military spec) and battery just fitted.
Please note that luxury equipment on this vehicle (including bodywork) is minimal. I checked Air Conditioning because it has no doors and Cruise Control because it has a hand throttle.
I purchased this vehicle 14 years ago directly from the importer. It has seen verylimited use since then. I recently sold my house and no longer have covered storage, so it's time for it to find a new home. It is not currently registered for the road, but it is 100% street legal and is sold with a clean Colorado title. The odometer (which is in kilometers) reads 25,439, but I have know way of knowing if this is accurate. The vehicle is sold with no warranty, expressed or implied. I have done my best to describe everything accurately, but please bare in mind that this is a 40+ year old unrestored vehicle. Please ask questions - I will do my best to answer them quickly and take additional photos if needed. Personal inspections are welcomed by appointment - the vehicle is located in Gunnison, CO.
Please note that I will not reveal the reserve price (but it's set low, so bid with confidence), nor will I sell the vehicle prior to the completion of the auction.
