With a countrywide recession looming, Packard Motor Car Company was looking to keep a large portion of its luxury buyers in their showrooms for 1937. This lead to the introduction of the new Model 115C that year fitted with a 6-cylinder engine. While the rest of their Senior line-up continued to be produced by skilled craftsmen in limited quantities, it was fair to say Packard entered a mass production mode for supplying these popular, new 115C sedans. The larger Super Eight models were still custom crafted, and had a reduction of the chassis size to a sportier 134”, providing a further improved ride. This was possibly with some new elements for these exclusive, luxury vehicles for 1937 that would include the introduction of a fully independent Safe-T-Flex front suspension and hydraulic brakes. These two improvements, along with slightly higher compression engines with Stromberg carburetion for added horsepower, they make for one of the most sought after Packard touring models among driver enthusiasts today!
Offered here is our 1937 Packard Super Eight 1501 Convertible Victoria finished in highly desired Packard Cream with Red Leather interior and Tan Canvass folding top. This beautiful 5-passenger convertible represents one of only 96 ever produced and one of far fewer that still exist today! Power remains provided by its original 320ci Straight 8 engine (#397637) with 6.5:1 compression & Stromberg carburetor, both professionally rebuilt inside and out. Options and features include 3-speed manual transmission, dual side-mounted spare tires with hard covers, Packard See-Rite mirrors, Trippe fog lamps, rear luggage rack with matching trunk, deluxe hood ornament, rear back-up light, heater/defrost, Packard Deluxe radio with cowl antenna, engine oil filtration system, trumpet horns, and BF Goodrich Silvertown wide whitewall tires measuring 7.50-16 4-ply tires.
This stunning Victoria Convertible was sold new from Packard Motor Car Company of New York selling January 13th, 1937. Our history of the car then picks up with the complete restoration by Frank Childs of Boca Raton, Florida to what appears to be a remarkably solid and well preserved body and smooth chassis. He chose Harbor Auto Restoration of Pompano Beach, FL in 1995 for the paint, interior, and overall mechanical overhaul. The engine was sublet to Custom Engine Service of Hialeah, FL for the machine work and balancing of the rotating assembly. This included hot tanked block, magnafluxed crankshaft, grind of rod journals, honed cylinder liners, new pistons & rings, new rods, insert-type rod bearings, polished mains with new bearings, cam rollers, timing chain, new head studs, rebuilt carburetor, rebuilt starter, new fuel lines, complete engine gasket set, etc. The rest of the restoration included all new exterior paint, fresh soft leather interior, brand new convertible top & boot, weather stripping, wiring harnesses, refinished chrome components, and so much more! It retains the factory engine splash pans and all Delco-Remy electrical components. Some pictures of the before and after will be included, along with the service receipts of the major service overhaul.
It was later sold to Jim Boros of Oak Brook, IL who would enjoy this lovely Packard for approximately 4 years before passing ownership to Lew Web of the Laguna Beach, California area to maintain ownership for the past 19 years! It does have the added aid of an electrical fuel pump for speedier fuel delivery between startups, along with a new exhaust manifold in 2000 and having the carburetor fully overhauled professionally by Custom Auto Service of Santa Ana, CA in 2007. You will be provided a 1937 Operation & Maintenance Data Manual, Packard Shop Manual, and storage car cover with purchase.
