Description

1936 Packard 1401 5-Passenger Victoria Coupe

Sold new at Bush-Morgan Packard in Pasadena, California on July 25, 1936, this car received a full 10-year restoration to concours show quality level that was completed in 2012. The restoration was comprehensive and spared no expense to bring this car back to correct showroom condition.

All worn body wood was replaced with hand-formed Ash hardwood. The body panels were hand fit and finished with Dupont ChromaOne single-stage acrylic urethane paint in correct 1936 Packard Blue. The paint is beautiful with a deep, hand-rubbed shine and Tuscan Red pinstriping. All trim was re-plated to show quality.

The interior upholstery is specially-imported English wool in correct pattern and stitching. Simply gorgeous. All interior trim was re-plated and garnish moldings and dashboard correctly wood grained and lacquered to a high gloss. Instruments and gauges were all re-built and the faces restored. Optioned with a correct Packard heater.

Mechanically, this car is a standout. The original 320 cubic inch straight eight was fully rebuilt by Ed Edwards of Seattle, along with the transmission and differential, which is set-up with high-speed gears. The engine runs whisper-quiet. The Bijur "one-shot" lubrication system and Packard "Ride Control" adjustable shock absorbers have been fully rebuilt and work perfectly. An electric fuel pump has been added for easy starting after periods of sitting. I have personally driven this car and it is a pleasure around town and on the freeway, easily keeping up with modern traffic. The fully rebuilt, 4-wheel mechanical brakes stop the car smooth and straight and would make you believe they are modern hydraulics; but they are indeed all-original Packard.

The car rides on a 134" wheelbase and features dual sidemounted spare tires, trunk rack and bail-and-feather radiator cap ornament. The clean, flowing lines of the car stand out and highlight this very rare body style.

On its first (and only) showing, this car received First Place in Class at the Forest Grove Concours d'Elegance, one of the top shows on the west coast. Since restoration it has only been driven a total of approximately 1200 miles. It is today in top condition, ready for the show circuit where it will no doubt garner more top awards. If you choose to tour the car, it is an ideal Packard. With space for four people and plenty of luggage. It is recognized by the Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) as a Full Classic™ and is eligible for all of their tours, shows and events. Of course this car would also be welcome for showing and touring with the Packard Club.

Well over $100,000 has been invested in this car to bring it to the level you see. If you are looking for what is arguably the finest restoration of one of the rarest Packard Senior body styles produced, this is it. Only four examples of the 1401 Victoria Coupe are known to exist today. It could not be duplicated to this level for the reserve asking price. Please bid accordingly.

WE WILL HAPPILY SELL TO BIDDERS, WORLDWIDE.
