Very rare, special order example for California Chrysler executive! Loaded with options including the performance Formula S package, special 1966 options including paint color, vinyl roof, and factory front disc brakes! Even has factory air conditioning! A true one-of-one ever built! Fully restored to better that factory condition throughout! Complete with original broadcast sheet, original window sticker, and body tags! Not an easy car to find in this condition!
Plymouth first introduced the Barracuda in 1964 based on the A-Body platform used for the Valiant and entered the compact, sports car field alongside the Ford Mustang. This new model would have a huge wrap around rear window to produce the Fastback design they were after, and was offered with both 6 cylinder and V8 engine options. By 1965, Plymouth elected to increase power optioned to include the 273ci Commando V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor, 10.25:1 compression, solid lifters, and more aggressive camshaft to produce 235 horsepower and 280 ft. lbs. The Torquefite automatic let loose of the pushbutton selector of the past in exchange for console mounted units. In addition to these upgrades, factory installed air conditioning and disc brakes became optional for late production 1965 units in preparation for the 1966 model, its final offering of these beautiful first generation Barracudas. The top performance version was the Formula S package option. This included the Commando V8 engine, heavy duty suspension (stiffer springs & sway bar), firm ride shocks, dash tachometer, wider blue streak tires, and bolt on wheel covers! Of the 58,709 Barracuda built, only 2,994 would be ordered with the Formula S package!
We are very excited to offer this exceptionally rare 1965 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S Sports Hardtop finished in custom special order color (999) Yellow over Black vinyl interior (P4X) and matching 100% original vinyl roof. This yellow color was not official offered until 1966. This is because our example was built for Chrysler executive, C.A. Folker, considered a “brass hat” vehicle, and delivered very late, not until September 1965. According to the original sales documentation, it sold directly back to Chrysler Motor Corporation of Detroit, MI, but instructed to be delivered to a Chrysler Regional Office in San Francisco, CA after production. It was assembled in California with just about every single option they would allow!
Options on this car include the Formula S package, TorqueFlite automatic transmission, factory air conditioning, 3-spoke steering wheel, padded instrument panel, left outside remote mirror, full vinyl roof cover, power front disc brakes, back up lights, all tinted window glass, day/night rearview mirror, windshield washers with variable speed wipers, California-only emissions (positive crankcase ventilation), Transaudio AM radio, and deleted rear seatbelts! According to ex-Chrysler executive John H.O. Sloan, who maintains critical history and production stats for these Barracudas, indicated just 294 were built with a vinyl roof, and only 117 would be fitted with factory disc brakes! Factor in the rarity of the Formula S models built, along with special order color, we would consider this particular Barracuda an undeniable one-of-one to ever exist!!
It stayed with the original owners for a large portion of its early life while still in California. They finally parted ways with it in 1996 when sold to a California Highway Patrol officer from San Diego, CA who elected to make it his daily driver when not on duty. He then sold it to Robert Cox, former MOPAR dealer from 1969-1974 from Scottsbluff, NE who commissioned an unbelievable, concours quality restoration! It began in approximately 2003 with only NOS period-correct parts or nothing else. Special attention to this meant finding only the best new & used replacement parts money could buy. Even sourcing a new windshield that retained the Mopar markings, an original exhaust resonator specific to Formula cars, piecing together 4 sets of wheel covers to make one perfect set, and on and on! Even the air compressor is the original Chrysler issue (now R134a) along with a MOPAR tar top battery and spark plug wires! The engine was fully rebuilt to factory spec included new original-style EGGE pistons and rings, all new bearings, polished crank, rebuilt Carter AFB carburetor, rebuilt heads with fresh valves & modern guides. This was completed by noted engine machinist Don Hackenberg of Denver, CO. The body remained 100% rust free without any required patchwork or replacement metal. It was stripped of all exterior chrome, stainless trim, window glass and professionally painted, with the engine remove, by Carl Francisco’s Bumper to Bumper Shop. All window gaskets are new as well as all body weather stripping. The interior dash, door panels, and sail panels remain original, but the seat upholstery & padding are Legendary Interior replacements along with a new headliner and floor carpeting. New suspension, new brakes, wheel bearings, Diamondback Blue Stripe radial tires, etc. It really could not be any nicer, or more correct! Included with the sale will be the original window sticker, two factory broad cast sheets, original sale transfer paperwork. It will be the only one you will ever see like it. It has had just a handful of lucky owners since 1965. Will you be the next caretaker? Please feel welcome to call with questions or schedule a chance to review in person!
