1969 Plymouth Barracuda Description

No surprises or hidden bodywork with this car, it is solid and wearing what is left of its original paint! A California time capsule! Please read the entire description, as I think I cover almost every question about the car.

What I am offering up for sale is a 1969 Barracuda Notchback (sometimes called a coupe). What I can tell you is that it has a numbers matching 318 engine 2 BBL carb and numbers matching column shifted 904 transmission backed by a 7 ¼ rear end (the pinion seal has a small leak and needs replacement). It wears its original F8 green exterior paint, has the original F8 standard green interior that is well worn on the front seats. It has a 120 speedo, factory N85 tachometer, hood mounted turn signal indicators, air conditioning, and the rare AM/FM stereo, power steering and power assisted brakes with stock small bolt pattern wheels and original hubcaps. All of the glass is intact and crystal clear and original to the car, except for the windshield that was replaced at some point.

Here is the factory fender tag decoding that you can copy and paste into your browser:

What you get is a super solid car that has very little rust repair needed. There are a couple of small dents on the driver’s side fender. The car is a factory undercoated car that has held up very well and always been in California. Outside of the patina and surface rust (which looks really cool in my opinion) there are three rust spots I can see – in the drivers and passenger side lower quarter/rocker directly underneath the rear windows which is notorious for not draining when water got down there. The other is the underneath the rear window trim (the dutchman panel, or window channel) on the passenger side has 1-2 pinholes you can see if you look carefully.

The grille is intact and in amazing shape, the original chrome on the bumpers shows great, and the trunk finish panel is amazingly straight, though of the color and silver argent finish has worn away. All of the trim is intact and very straight (including the wheel well trim), and the factory script and fish emblems are all intact and are in great shape, including the Pentastar on the passenger lower quarter. The headlights signals and taillights all work, and there is a blown reverse light on the passenger side, and the pot metal housings has some usual pitting.

The engine runs and drives, and has the original 2bbl Holley and manifold, along with the A/C compressor and plumbing. It has a brand new fuel pump and I set the timing a 8 degrees initial on the electronic ignition that was added along the way. The transmission shifts smoothly. The radiator and overflow tank is a Chrysler unit, but is not original to the car. The exhaust has been upgraded to a dual exhaust with an 'H' pipe through the stock manifolds, but still has the original valance for single exhaust. The heat riser audibly rattles when started cold, but it quiets down as the engine warms up.

The car has surface rust on the roof, trunk and hood, but was not an original vinyl top car, so the roof is not rotted AT ALL, just sunburned. The interior door panels are missing on this car, and the passenger side armrest base and pad are missing (the screws are in the glove box along with the original owner’s manual. The bezel is in amazing shape and is unbroken. The headliner has some small tears, but it is intact and not hanging down anywhere. The car has the optional shoulder harnesses, and the back seatbelts still are wrapped in their original plastic and are located under the original back seat. I did not look for a buildsheet, but I also did not remove the original back seat to look for it, and you can’t see it from the trunk because the original divider is still in place. It could very likely still be in there.

The trunk is all original, the spare tire is shot, but the jack and stand are in place under the original spare tire cover. The original trunk mat shows its age, but replacements are available. There are also some disc brakes with spindles, hoses, and lower control arms located in the trunk along with the vents for the air conditioning . They are not Kelsey Hayes 4 piston calipers (sorry), but single piston calipers and seem to be large bolt pattern wheels, because when I tried fitting the spare, it would not clear the hub, and the lug holes did not line up.

This beauty of this car is that it is relatively untouched and it is super solid. I have done my best to describe the car as best I can, and I have it priced so that a car guy can get a running, driving, super solid original California car without breaking the bank and can do whatever they want with it! Great candidate for a resto mod, big block and 4 speed conversion, or run it as it sits and tweak the 318 for more power with a 4bbl and intake. You are limited by only your talent and budget, but this car is a rock solid starting point!
