Up for sale is a 1961 Plymouth Fury. The car is completely original and unrestored. It was owned by the same person until the late @90s. It was always a California car. The original owner had her license taken away – not because of her age, but the license had been expired for several years without her knowledge. The car ran and drove daily until 2007 by the second owner. The second owner drove it until the engine failed and he parked in in a warehouse for a few years. The car is INCREDIBLY straight and complete. I have purchased FIVE Furys and Savoys, prior to finding this one, in pursuit of parts and rust free bodies. I have never seen a more unrestored original in the country. They are few and far between.
I have spent countless hours of research and gathered so much documentation on the production of the 61s that it dwarfs the time it would take for the frame off restoration. The car is an identical model of my Father’s very first car.
The 61s are VERY few and far between. The car controversial yet was also very progressive and innovative for the time. Fins and bullets were no longer the start of the design. The space race had begun and the Plymouth took full advantage of the future dreams. The rocket embossed driver’s seat was a raised headrest/pilots platform as a cockpit with “space gauges” and optional star reflections “Glass” Sparkle steering wheel. The HUGE rear glass let passenger in the back seat see the stars simply by looking upward. Even the taillights were designed to resemble glowing rocket afterburners. Everything was smoother and streamlined, but still adorned LOTS of chrome. Even so, people noted that it was one of the ugliest cars of the time. The car was SO ugly, it actually became cool. Unfortunately VERY few are on the road today, even at large shows. If you are a car show enthusiast, ask yourself, “Have I ever seen a 1961 Fury at a car show?”….. Have you ever seen one at all?.
Controversy surround the model year. It was the first car to implement a uni-body’s sub-frame, and the first year for a standard alternator. The car was cursed with a powerful dual carb V-8 that may last 50Kmiles with hard use. However, a handful were actually built with the infamous 413 Sonoramic intake systems. This was never an option in the books, due to a “printing error” on the special order docket used by dealers at the time, but was available and became the holy grail of the year. As one drivetrain production line foreman said “ we would get a hand written option order to drop one of the cross ram 413’s in the 61s and had to go find one to wheel out to the line.” My original intention was to find a clean car and original parts to build the rare61 413 Sonoramic combo and restore them period correct street sleeper. This would be a car that I could be confident would NEVER see another at a show.
Due to recent a health issue, I am selling off unfinished projects and all related parts with great sadness I purchased the car in 2011. The car is INCREDIBLY straight and complete. I have purchased FIVE Furys and Savoys, prior to finding this one, in pursuit of correct parts and rust free bodies. The car is a 6 cylinder with a manual column shift. I have collected the correct hard to find parts as NOS, restorable or restored for the 413, cross ram intake, and push button recreation.
I am listing the car separate from the parts, however, the winner of the car auction will have first chance at buying the parts I have for the reserve price of the parts listings. Once the auction is completed and paid, I will then list the remaining parts (listed below) on the auction site, the following week.
The listing shows several pictures of the car since I brought it home. Please note, I have NOT touched the body other than the parts restoration that I will try to describe to the best of my ability. If you have any questions, ask them LONG BEFROE the auction is closed. You are welcome and ENCOURAGED to come view the car BEFORE you bid.
MECHANICAL CONDITION: The car does NOT run. It rolls and steers and stops. Otherwise, I believe the motor knocks if started-if not, frozen up at this point. The rear brakes locked up last year and I cut the original drums off. No battery on the car currently, but I put one in to check power/wires when I first bought the car and the car was electrically sound. Some of the lighting (bulbs) failed, but the sockets were getting power. I removed and discarded the fuel tank as it has traces of water and rust when I pulled it out. The “Jiffy” windshield washer bag is missing. Mechanically, otherwise the engine/drivetrain appear complete. Tires are OLD, but hold air. Wheels are late model, 15” Magnum style wheels, with one steel mis-match.
BODY CONDITION: The Body still wears the ORIGINAL Paint (Light Beige Lower, White TOP). The driver’s side front fender has been scraped with a line dent and headlight bucket split. The driver’s side rear quarter was backed into a tree (Original owner explained happened in the early 90s), and also bent rear bumper. There is rust (appears poorly filled or attempted) on the passenger side rear quarter in front of the wheel well. (I HAVE a NEW NORS steel rocker replacement panel that IS included with the car to repair the quarter). The floor pans (as shown in the pictures) are perfect and AMAZING. The only “holes” are the two that the last owner drilled into the floor to add seat belts (Remember- seat belts were no yet standard). The trunk floor has the original liners, and looks like they held moisture on the floor years back and collected surface rust. The doors, truck and hood still function solid tight and smooth. Understand, I searched for this car for 10 years before I landed on the car I believe to be the most solid original on the planet. I have owned SEVERAL muscle cars that were built a decade after this car and NONE were as solid.
EXTERIOR/TRIM CONDITION: The Stainless and Chrome trim on the car is very complete. Two headlight trim rings are missing and one DS rear corner trim is missing. (I DO have NEW replacements / RESTORED replacements available to the buyer). Side trim and window trim is better than expected. (I DO have a COMPELTE set of trim available to the buyer). Grill and hood catch access are NOS and included with car. Front grill rocket is missing (I DO have and NOS rocket available to the buyer). Good original DS side remote mirror IS included with the car.
INTERIOR/TRIM CONDITION: The interior is mostly original. It was originally a Caramel color. The last owner a removed the armrest to recover the pads and lost them. I am including a set of armrest with the sale of the car. I had the two selector panels re-chromed…. Not to use for the restoration, but to test the chroming company that I was to send other larger parts to (yes, these are included). I removed the original carpet when I bought it. I removed the seats to replace the driver’s side springs as the bolster was sagging. During this time I found an original set of the Silver/Grey/Black/White upholstery that I was looking for. Unfortunately, it was in Australia. The set cost me $1000, but he shipped it with the cost included. While I had the bolster springs replaced, I had them re-pad all of the cushions and then cover the seats with the new upholstery. The rest of the interior appears all original. The headliner is all there with the bows, as are the visors. The dash has the “optional” pad which is cracked, but I was going to remove it completely. Door and kick panels are all there. ALL trim and clips are better than expected. Overall the original pieces if the interior is in driver condition but should be restored
CURRENT ASSEMBLY: Windshield was removed and discarded. Seal (expensive) is still in form and in place on the windshield opening. The front bumper was removed, but will be bolted in place prior to transport to buyer. Headlight buckets/ trim, and grill was removed for inspection. Parts are tagged ad boxed in the trunk. The original grill was discarded and a NEW NOS unit is included. Again, the fuel tank was discarded and will need replacing. The front and rear window chrome trim was removed. It is tagged and included in the trunk. The trunk trim was removed and tagged in the trunk.
