I am selling my 1965 Pontiac GTO convertible clone. This car has an absolutely beautiful body and paint job and a new top that works great. The engine isa professionally built Pontiac 389 with the GTO 3x2 carbs set up, headers and a strong cam. The oil pressure is as it should be .The ignition has been replaced with a Mallory high performance system. The car has a Vintage Air system that works great and it also has power steering and brakes and it runs and sounds as it should. The transmission is a 3 speed Turbo 400 with a shift kit and the rear end is a posi traction with the tag still on it. The car runs cool and never overheats even in parades. The power steering pump has a slight leak where the filler neck attaches to the reservoir. You will find a newfactory rebuilt pump in the trunk. There is a pinhole leak in the gas tank that I repaired with Devcon epoxy. You will find a new galvanized gas tank in the trunk with a new mounting strap kit . I just haven't had a chance to install these items. All of the dash gauges work except the tach but it has a Sunpro tach on the column. The wipers work but not asstrong as they should and the hornitself worksgood but the steering wheel button does not. The rear air shocks work but they should be replaced. The emergency brake does not work. There is a good spare and jack in the trunk. I installed a newvintage style AM / FM / MP3 radio . Works good but needs a much more serious speaker system. I removed a thermostat controlled electric fan in favor of a Flex Fan. I also have a steel race fan. The electric unit is in the trunk.
The person who built the car went to great effort to make sure the GTO badging was correct. You would need to check the VIN number to tell that it is a clone. The body looksvery straight and the red/orange paint is almost flawless...as good asoriginal and it is an original color. The interior is the correct GTO black vinyl in great shape. There are no cracks andonly a small bit of wear on the welting where you rub getting in and out. All the glass and chrome is in good shape and the carpet is new. The dash pad is in good shape with no wear or cracks. The wheels are vintage style 5 spoke aluminum and the tires are in very good condition. I feel the front seats could use more stuffing but I am old.
I bought this car about 2 years ago and what attracted me to it was how good it looked and ran. The car came with a box of receipts that showed the previous owners had put a lot of money into making it right. I have driven it as often as I had the time mainly to car shows and fun driving on the country roads where I live. It drives very well, tracks straight and stops well. If you want to know how much was spent on the car I have the receipts.
Things were gooduntil last week. I had plans to have installed new light weight upper and lower control arms, a dual master cylinder and 4 wheel disc brakes so I took it to a restoration shop to get an estimate on the job. Yesterday the owner of the shop called with information that I did not want to hear. It seems as though the car has some serious rust issues with the frame. When I bought it I had a few minutes to look under the car and I did notice some rust on the frame but it did not look any worse than you would expect on a Michigan car. It seems the rust was much worse than I thought. I don't know if the previous owner knew about this problem before putting the money in the car.......maybe the folks doing the work did not want to tell him. The convertible has a box frame for strength and that's where the problem is.
This brings me to offering the GTO at a very reasonable price to someone who wants to try and fix it or just use it for parades or low speed town driving. I am not able to fix the problem myself and the restorer said it would not be cost effective for him to make the repairs, especially on a clone. This would be a great project car for someone with the skills and equipment to make the frame sound again. Fix the frame and the rest of the car is ready to go with very little effort and it attracts a lot of attention and praise. If you need more pictures I can send them but I can't get a picture of the frame as I have no way to get under there.
