1965 Pontiac GTO PHS Documented~~389 Tri-Power~~Factory Air Conditioning
1965 Pontiac GTO gto Description
1965 PONTIAC GTO
This 1965 Pontiac GTO is a two owner car, with the past ownership being one that lasted over 30 years. This GTO was purchased new in the sunny Gulf Coast of Mississippi, where it remained until I purchased it. This is a Pontiac Historical Society (PHS) documented GTO.
The engine is the correct "YS" coded 389/335hp, with the very desirable "Tri-Power" 3 deuce style carburetors. Due to the summer heat on the gulf shores, this GTO was ordered with (and still has) working Factory Air Conditioning . The Air Conditioning system has been converted over to the newer style 135a refrigerant. This GTO is fun to drive and does so with ease since it has power steering and power brakes. The GTO still retains the use of its factory exhaust manifolds with duel turbo mufflers. The transmission is a 2 speed automatic, which I think is the only option that you could get when you chose the air conditioning option. The rear axle is the factory standard 3:08 ratio.
The exterior of this GTO is very nice and straight. This Pontiac was last refinished around 17 years ago in the original "Mayfair Maize" color and is accented by a black Cordova top. The paint is very nice, but after years of driving enjoyment there are some minor rock chips and wear. The floor pans and trunk pans have both had patch work done to them, but are presentable. The trim work and chrome bumpers appear to have been replaced at the time of the refinishing and are still in very nice condition. They compliment the shine of the paint very well. The trunk of the car still retains a full spare and bumper jack, which are also nicely detailed. The wheels are the Pontiac Ralley I rims with classic white line tires.
The interior of this GTO is in very nice condition and is all original. The dash is very nice and all gauges and lights work as they should. The radio is an AM unit that plays well. Even the reverb rear speaker still functions. The clock on the other hand has a mind of its own and chooses when it wants to work and when it does not. The seats are nice, but after 52 years of enjoyment there are small areas were the stitching has come loose. There is also a 3 inch area on the back of the driver's seat where the piping has come loose. The automatic console looks great and shines very well. The original seat belts are still intact and function properly.
Overall, this is a very nice and very original PHS documented GTO. This car can be driven and enjoyed for years to come and will be a local show winner. This is not a 100 point show car, but it is a rare GTO with the options that it has.
