1979 Pontiac Trans Am Special Edition Description

1979 Special Edition Y84 Trans Am Bandit with hardtop, 1 OF LESS THAN 20! Of the 10,000+ SE bandits made in 1979, less than 20 hardtop versions are known to exist, this is one of the rarest muscle cars ever made. This particular car was verified to be one of the few existing Y84 t-top delete cars by Pontiac Historical Society and the documentation comes with the car, along with a clean vehicle history report from NMVTIS. It was shipped in May of 1979 to Pennsylvania from the Ohio plant. The Special Edition option came automatically with t-tops and almost noone understood that they had the choice to delete that option which is why there are so few of these cars today. I recently purchased this car and was going to fix up a couple things and drive the hell out of it but after realizing it was a Y84 hardtop (t-top delete) decided to sell it as is and let the new owner decide what to work on and what to leave original. The parts in great shape like front bumper cover and foam insert, dash, console, floor pans, rear bumper cover and foam insert, solid frame/subframe/body will save thousands and thousands of dollars in parts and countless hours of work. I will do my absolute best to be 100% transparent and very detailed about all positives and negatives on this car. INTERIOR: Interior is in overall great condition but needs some finishing touches. The dash and console are all original and have no cracks or chips and look awesome. The interior matches what an SE should have (like the gold firebird on steering wheel and shifter knob, etc) and the machined panel on dash looks good. It has no headliner, but it does seem to have all the interior trim pieces in the trunk like seatbelts and visors and trim, but does not have the door panel armrests. It has new carpet in it, but needs to be glued down or adjusted in spots. The seats are original, no rips or stains and the backseats look great. Options on the car include rear window defrost, custom air conditioning, acoustical insulation, vanity mirror, tilt steering, delay wipers, deluxe trim, am/fm radio, and the Y84 special edition package. DRIVETRAIN: This car runs and drives well but is a partial project car to bring it to top value of a showcar or top of the line auction car. The odometer reads 55k but the speedometer bounces while driving so I don't know if the odometer is registering mileage accurately. I am not a serious mechanic, so all of this info regarding engine and transmission is based on internet research. The motor is not original, it does not have the 403 that the vin calls for. I can not find the engine serial numbers, but the best guess is this is a 4.9L 301turbo currently in it (the codes PBJ, 29N, and 195787 were legible if that helps). This would make sense if the transmission is a 3speed turbo as that tranny is compatible with the 301 turbo and the 403 engines, meaning an engine swap back to the 403 should be compatible with existing transmission. Runs and drives great as is, but there is a minor transmission fluid leak somewhere. There is a receipt for the current tires from 2004, and the tires look almost new, so it has not been driven much in the last 13 years. The car drives very well and sounds awesome when idling and driving, it sounds exactly like a muscle car should. BODY: The frame, subframe, and body sheetmetal all look good and are basically rust free. Trunk, floor pans, etc are all solid. The paint job looks decent but up close you can tell it's not a top of the line paint job, which won't matter anyhow if someone is restoring it to match as the paint code calls for black paint. New parts needed include hood hinges, some window trim pieces, gas cap taillight door, passenger door handle, the trim pieces in front under the front bumper, The front bumper rubber molding looks great (no cracks or deformities), and the bumper insert that it connects to is in good shape. The original gold honeycomb wheels are in nice shape and the tires look almost new. Very small crack in bottom corner of windshield. Headlights, turn signals, brake lights and wipers all work.

I have been as thorough and accurate as possible with my description and included as many pics as ebay would allow, hope this helps. Any 1979 Special Edition is a valuable car as is, and combined with the rarity of Y84 hardtops this car could be very valuable if the right guy gets his hands on it. Everyone that has seen this car loves it, it is very cool as is, but could be incredible if someone put some time into it. I hope I see it being auctioned for big dollars on tv someday. Car can be inspected in the Kalmazoo MI area, email for details.
This listing requires a non-refundable $1,000 deposit within 24 hours of auction ending, and remainder of balance due within 7 days. If deposit is not received within 24 hours car will be relisted and ebay will be contacted. Car sells as is, buyer responsible for all inspections of vehicle. Buyer responsible for pickup of vehicle or delivery. Towing recommended for a vehicle this old until all safety inspections have been completed and in particular the seat belts reinstalled.
