1965 Pontiac GTO Restomod
1965 Pontiac GTO Description
This 1965 Pontiac GTO was last registered in 1985, with 78K miles, when restoration was started by another individual that, unfortunately, passed away before completion. His intention of this restoration was to completely restore with minor updates for drivability. His vision was to both show and drive this car, but not put it to a state of concourse restoration, and only look at it in his garage. The car was completely disassembled, with all new body mounts and hardware purchased for reassembly. The body was not removed from the frame, as there were no issues to contend with.
Most all of the exterior emblems and trim were replaced with new pieces, but I still have all of the original trim, which are in good condition. All of the original glass, except the windshield, was reinstalled. There are some minor scratches on the side glass.
The beautiful two-stage paint done in 2004 is by one of Nevada's legendary painters, Starvin' Marvin Custom Painting. The interior is all new, with all gauges replaced and working, addingvac and volt gauges to replace the idiot light, along with a new NOS wiring loom. A classic car stereo, with port, was also added, along with a vintage Corvette steering wheel. The front seats have been lowered two inches to sit more comfortably in the car. The original radio, restored steering wheel and gauges will be included.
The 389 engine with four-barrel carb and four-speed trans was completely rebuilt in 2009, and all of the chassis was restored to original, including the rare HD brakes with aluminum front drums.
The car languished on a lift at a restoration shop for a decade due to illness before my acquisition in March of 2016. Gathering up all of the parts from this shop and his house, I took on the task of putting together a muscle car, which just happened to be the same color GTO that was the fastest car when I was in high school in 1973.
My intention was to do as the past owner had planned, with a very nice original driver. After putting everything back together and driving the car, I was not as impressed as I was when I was a high school junior and decided that some upgrades were in order, as I am a hot-rodder that has high expectations from my cars. Being a vintage hot-rod guy for the last 30 years, I thought it best to work with the shop that had originally performed the motor rebuild and is well known for its restomod and pro-touring cars. We decided to go the restomod route by rebuilding the engine once again, this time with balancing and blueprinting everything and adding a Lunati thumper cam with custom 400 pistons and a 2x4 Edelbrock intake and carbs. Full Flowmaster exhaust system and four-core aluminum radiator were installed. A custom-ratio Tremic five-speed from Silver Sport Transmissions was used to work with the new 323-ratio Auburn posi, with new axles. A full BMR tubular suspension, with KYB gas shocks and quick-ratio power steering box were installed. HD power brakes were added, along with the rare aluminum front drums that stop this very heavy car incredibly well. I had planned to add Baer brakes, but couldn't get past not using the rare brakes that were on the car and was very amazed how well they worked. Custom powder-coated American Salt Flat wheels that match the original silver will also be included in the sale.
The GTO now drives and handles as a high-performance muscle car should. It is very comfortable and very solid, with the ability to shift into fifth at 75 mph. This car is an incredibly great driver that should be used as it was meant to be.
Included with this sale are boxes of all of the original restored motor, trans, and suspension parts, along with the PHS documentation and $59,682 in receipts spent on this build.
The car is for sale locally, so this auction can end at any time. The price is the starting bid, with no reserve. Buyer is responsible for the pickup of both the car and all of the boxes of parts.
No warranty, expressed or implied, on this vehicle. Sold in as-is condition. All sales final. Serious buyers can see and drive the car and inspect it on a lift.I am available for all questions 775-560-3055.
