The original owners bought the car new in 1965, the husband died in the 80's and his wife drove the car after that until approx. 1992. when she was too old to drive anymore, she then parked it in the garage and there it sat until she passed away in 2010.
I bought the car from her kids, when they were cleaning out there parents estate. They said she refused to sell the car and for awhile tried to keep it maintained but eventually it just sat unattended for many years..
I towed it home and over the next year whenever I had time I worked on the car. all fluids were cleaned out and replaced, including the gas tank, new hoses, complete tune up with all AC Delco parts, many NOS when I could find them. New gas lines and front brake lines. New water pump and master cylinder, I had the carburetor completely rebuilt. Basically I did everything needed to get her running like new.
It had all new brakes and rotors, I believe this had to be done just before the previous owner stopped driving.
When I bought the car it had about 85k miles, There is now just over 89k miles. I drive the car in the summers and every fall I put the car up on blocks, remove the battery and plugs and lube the pistons. Every spring, I change the oil, put a little gas in the carb and she starts right up. The car runs on Leaded gas so a Lead Additive is added to each fill up.
I've never had a problem finding any part - everything is available online.
This car always starts right up, runs smooth and drives straight, when you let go of the wheel it keeps straight and when you step on the brakes, it stops smooth and straight.
The interior is all original. Headliner is all intact, dashboard, door panels, everything is all original and in very good condition. Front seat has a tear at the seam on driver and passenger side.
Dash lights all work, the clock and gas gauge do not work, I've written down the gas I put in and the miles, but found adding gas every 100 miles makes it easier to track. I've never tried to fix any electrical issues. The AM radio, cigarette lighter, wipers, heat, front and rear defrost all work. it did not come with AC.
All the windows and (4) doors work, only the drivers side wing window needs a little push when opening and closing, can be easily fixed I just prefer not to take the door panels off and risk any damage due to the cars age.
The body has some dings and dents and surface rust. the bottom sides are rusted through, the quarter panels have it the worst. Engine Compartment and Floor Boards are all Solid as far as I can see, I've never removed any panels or carpet. The trunk is mostly solid with some surface rust, only where the trunk meets the wheel wells on both sides have some rust holes.
The paint is original as far as I can tell, some spots have been touched up. There is one piece of chrome missing from the bottom of one fender, other than that, all chrome is there and intact.
I never did any work to the body or major mechanical work. As far as I can tell, They bought the car new, drove it all there lives and always took great care of it mechanically, just never did any body work. I basically only replaced/repaired all the general maintenance stuff that would most likely be done over time all at once because it sat so long. Despite the car looking like something you'll find dead in a junk yard and appearing at first glance to have run its course and ready to be crushed, surprisingly she always starts right up, runs and drives like its 10years old.
Its hard to find a car from 1965 that had one owner, is still all original and was so well taken care of.
If you're in Chicago and want to come see the car, I'm near Ohare Airport. Send me a message if you have any questions, I will also take any specific pics requested. The car must be picked up and arranged by the buyer. I cannot arrange delivery but If purchased out of state, I can drive the car to a dock or trucking company, you'll just need to reimburse me for the Taxi back home. I would also be open to reasonable offers
If picking up the car, we will go to the currency exchange and transfer the title at the time of sale. If you're out of state title will still need to be transferred at time of sale.
