1964 Pontiac Catalina 4 door sedan. 27100 original miles. Parked for 40 years in a dry garage in dry New Mexico. Ordered new from Quality Pontiac in Albuquerque March of 64. Built in April 64. I have protect o plate and tank build sheet with car.
White with turquoise interior, 389 2 bbl carb, automatic transmission A/C, P/S, P/B, deluxe steering wheel, front seat belts and radio delete.
I removed 1975 Montgomery Wards tires that were only a third worn. Determining that the car was not driven much after 75 and parked in the later 70’s. Pulled from the garage in August 2018.
The fuel system was completely gone through and the engine started and ran great with the exception of major oil leaks.
At that time the engine was pulled and completely resealed with modern rear main seal and other gaskets and then detailed. Original spark plug wires are intact and dated 1st quarter of 64. Battery cables also OE.
Cooling system has been updated with the original radiator being completely rebuilt, new water pump, fan clutch, thermostat, upper and lower hoses. Coolant -20 degrees F.
Upper control arm bushings were replaced as a precaution because they were cracked.
The 3 speed Hydromatic automatic transmission (aka Slim Jim) seemed odd in its design when the engine was out.
Research found that it was not a good design and only used 4 years and 1964 being the last year. I also noted a built in “puke tank” on the vent tube indicating that the factory was having trouble with this transmission. The internet did not have good things to say of this unit either.
So now the car is equipped with a modern 4 speed rebuilt 700r4 overdrive transmission. Mounting, driveshaft, linkage, neutral/reverse switches, shift indicator and speedometer have been professionally installed like factory. All original parts have been retained and go with the car if desired.
This car is now a true highway cruiser.
The new tires are Toyo Extensa A/S radials and balanced great. The spare tire is believed to be an original Firestone to the car. All jacking equipment is intact and perfect.
Braking system was completely rebuilt as necessary and the front wheel bearings inspected and packed with new seals.
All the chrome is in very nice condition as is the glass and interior. Headlights are original T3 w/ no pits. Rocker panels have minimal to hardly any rock pits in them.
No rust anywhere.
The paint is 54 years old and has had some repairs back in the day but is still a great driver paint job.
It runs and drives like new. Many smiles per gallon with this one and people love to look at it.
I have many more pictures of the engine reseal and transmission install.
The new owner is responsible for arranging and paying for transportation from Denver CO. Or fly in and drive it home.
