Overview
Car is a numbers matching 1970 Porsche 911E Reutter bodied 5 speed coupe. I bought the car in December of 2010 from an owner in California who owned many longhood 911s. He bought the car in 2009 from an owner in Oklahoma who owned the car for 25 years and whom started a “refresh”/ light restoration many years prior. The owner I bought the car from purchased it with many of the components ready, but needing to be installed which he completed. According to the p/o, the owner who performed the restoration was very unequivocal keeping the car E spec during the restoration.
Body
Bodywork is very straight on the car. There is one dent on the front left fender near antenna. Other than that there are no major flaws. Hood is mostly free of stone chips, but is not perfectly aligned. Other than the hood the panel gaps are very good. On the driver's side floor there was a non-rust related tear that was repaired by a previous owner and was further repaired again upon my acquisition of the car. I can provide more pictures of undercarriage upon request.
Paint
Car was originally "light grey" which was a special Porsche color that appears to be closer to white than grey from my research. Respray was done in the 90's and seems to have been done well as there are no signs of previous color. There is a bit of what seems to be sap on the left rear quarter panel. Paint has held up well but is not perfect. There are no major defects but paint is over 20 years old and suffers from typical wear and tear.
Wheel/Glass/Trim
Wheels are in pristine condition. When I purchased car the black on the wheels was fading and I had the wheels professionally redone. One of the wheels was bent and therefore had to be replaced. The other wheels are original to the car to my knowledge. The windshield is in perfect condition. The only flaw is in the driver's side glass where there is some scuffing. The chrome is in pretty good condition but there is some pitting especially in the bumper guards. The headlights are H4 units, but the car comes with the original sealed beam units as well. One of the turn signals was replaced at some point and there is a noticeable difference in color between the two. The car came with an incorrect hood crest and I have subsequently replaced it with a period correct "orange bar" crest.
Interior
Interior presents very original but with rest of car was "refreshed" in the 80's. The owner whom I bought the car from replaced the door pockets with other originals and is in solid condition. Seats are originals but have been redone and are in great shape. The dash has a small crack in it but is mostly contained in speaker grill; it is honestly not really that noticeable in the car. I believe the steering wheel is original but at some point has been rewrapped in vinyl. Carpet was also replaced at some point in dark grey and looks great with the rest of the interior. The radio does not work. It switches on but antenna does not go up so it may just be the antenna, I have never looked into it. The read parcel shelf was redone in German vinyl and really presents well. The rear seats and rear vinyl looks original and are in good condition but show their age more than rest of car. The headliner shows little wear, with no yellowing or sagging. Three of the gauges I sent off to be cleaned up and look perfect.One of which was the odometer, which was not working when I bought it and the title shows 180,000. My guess is the roughly 80,000 miles are those since the motor was rebuilt.
Mechanical
The engine was rebuilt in the to E spec at a great expense according to p/o. The car retains the correct MFI. The engine is original with proof via Certificate of Authenticity but does not provide a transmission number so I cannot say with 100% certainty it is original to car but I don’t see any reason in the car’s history why it would not be. Mechanically I have had to do very little to car as the p/o got the car in very good running order when I purchased the car. The biggest mechanical change I can tell is that the car is fitted with a Perma-tune electronic ignition module. The car drives great with very little, if any smoke upon startup even after a long time between startup. Car loves to rev and retains tight German feel even near redline. Gearbox is a 5 speed 901 and synchros are good, it can sometimes take a few tries to get the car into 1st, but I have been assured this is somewhat common in the 901 box. The car is garage kept on battery maintainer and is driven about once a week.
Overall the car is a very solid driver’s car. This car is not a garage queen; it gets driven and shows normal wear and tear. If you are looking for something that is turn key, but can also be continuously improved down the road, this is the car for you. While car runs great and shows well, keep in mind this is a car from 1970 and is nearly 50 years old so not everything is perfect. The car has been up kept for the last 7 years by a Porsche specialist and I have complete documentation of the car since I have owned it and would be happy to send a complete list of everything I have done to the car including maintenance, repairs upgrades etc. as well as take more pictures. I’m sure I may have missed something so feel free to ask questions.
