This is my 1971 Porsche 911T Targa which I am offering for sale due to the arrival of a 1966 E-type in my life.
The 911 was cosmetically and mechanically restored to a very high level in 2014 by German Motors of Providence, RI. The car is a matching numbers (chassis, engine, and transmission) example and the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) from Porsche is included. Please read on for more detailed info.
- Exterior: Body, Paint, and Glass
o Body has been painted in its original Silver Metallic color. In its past life the car was repainted red. This was stripped during restoration and a high quality two-stage paint job was performed.
o The entire vehicle is free of rust.
o The original hood, rear lid, doors, fenders and body panels are all in place and are straight and well aligned.
o Door jambs are in excellent condition.
o All glass was removed as part of the restoration. The windshield was replaced. The original rear window with factory tint and rear defog was in excellent condition and is retained. The side windows were also in excellent shape and are retained. All weather-stripping was replaced.
o There are two Targa tops with the vehicle. In the photos you can see the rigid fiberglass top which was refinished in semi-gloss black paint and re-lined on the underside. The top seals were replaced and it operates and latches perfectly. The “umbrella style” folding Targa top also functions and will fit in the trunk.
- Mechanicals: Engine & Drivetrain, Chassis, Suspension
o Current mileage is 99,240.
o The original 2.2L six cylinder engine was completely rebuilt and restored to “as original” appearance.
o The original Zenith carburetors were rebuilt and are in excellent condition.
o Belts, hoses, and ignition have been replaced.
o Wiring harnesses and electrical components have been restored or replaced as needed.
o The original two-battery configuration has been retained with properly replaced wiring.
o The original 5-speed dog-leg manual transmission was rebuilt and operates very well.
o Clutch system and throttle cables were replaced during restoration.
o Braking system is all new as per original configuration.
o New factory style exhaust system was installed.
o Heater boxes were replaced during restoration also.
o Chassis and floor-pan were restored to “as original” appearance.
o Floor-pan was cleaned and coated as per factory.
o Entire suspension was rebuilt using original reconditioned and new parts.
- Interior
o The mostly original interior was restored to an “as original” appearance.
o The black leatherette seat coverings were replaced on the original seats and besides a small scuff from my belt on the driver seat are in great condition.
o Seat mounts were replaced and are in perfect condition. All seat adjustments were restored and function perfectly.
o Original seatbelts were restored and are in excellent shape.
o Dashboard and trim panels are original and are in good shape: no cracks, rips or discoloration.
o Gauges were professionally restored and feature white LED backlighting: they function perfectly, look terrific, and are legible at night.
o Door cards are original and in great shape.
o Factory heater and blower system works exactly as it should. All fan speeds work, vent directionals work, and heater temperature control functions perfectly.
o New Retrosound Hermosa head unit is installed for the “vintage” Becker style appearance but with the convenience of Aux, USB, and Bluetooth integration.
o A Retrosound stereo speaker was installed in the single dash mounted speaker slot to provide stereo sound versus the original mono speaker.
o Every instrument works: wipers, lighter socket, rear defogger, trip meter reset, etc.
o Hand throttle works perfectly.
o Interior dome light works as do door sensors.
o All instrument lights work.
o Original rear seats are in good shape and can be raised and lowered as per design.
o All interior carpeting was replaced with high quality reproduction materials including Cocomats.
o There is a Nardi 13” wheel installed with a Nardi “Porsche” branded horn button. The original Porsche 380mm factory steering wheel is included in the sale. I replaced the wheel because at my size (6’2” and 200 lb) the larger diameter factory wheel was entirely too intimate with my thighs.
o Speaking of my size, the driver seat mounts were adapted via installation of rails to the tub mounts to allow the seat to slide further back than standard. This allows drivers of >6’ to operate the vehicle more comfortably.
o The shift knob is a matching wood finish to the wheel. It is easily removable if one wishes to return to a completely factory look.
- Rear engine compartment
o Rear engine compartment and firewall were restored to “as original” appearance.
o Rear lid was restored and painted and opens, closes, and latches properly. It is aligned perfectly.
- Front trunk compartment
o Front trunk area was restored to “as original” condition.
o Inner panels are solid and free of rust.
o Carpeting has been replaced with high quality reproduction materials including fasteners.
o Matching alloy spare wheel is included.
o Factory toolkit and jack are not included.
o Front lid aligns, opens, closes, and latches properly.
- Exterior: Bumpers, Trim, and Lighting
o Front and rear bumpers are original and have been refinished to excellent condition.
o All bumper trim was replaced and is in great shape.
o All emblems and chrome trim are in excellent condition.
o The satin finish Targa hoop is in perfect condition.
o The front grille inserts are in excellent condition.
o Rear grille and grille frame are in excellent shape.
o Headlamps have original “sugar scoop” style surrounds with very good chrome bezels. The lights are factory style Wagners.
o Parking lamp lenses and chromed housings are in great shape.
o Taillamp lenses and housings are excellent.
o The fuel filler flap actuates perfectly. The filler cap and rubber protector for the filling nozzle during filling has been replaced with a NOS part.
- Wheels and Tires
o The vehicle has original 14” Fuchs wheels which have been refinished.
o The 185/70R14 Sumitomo HTR 200 tires have <2K miles on them.
Speaking from the heart as a car enthusiast, this is a wonderful example of an attractive, well put together early long-hood 911. It starts reliably, idles well, revs properly and is fun to drive. I would not hesitate to drive this car anywhere from a reliability standpoint. Handling, shifting, steering, acceleration, and road noise are all exactly as they should be for this model.
As mentioned, I am offering this car for sale as I have been fortunate enough to acquire a Series 1 E-type Jag and both cars occupy the same “niche” for me. The E-type wins out and I do not drive the 911 enough to warrant holding onto it. I do have a 964 which allows me to get my rear-engined air-cooled fix.
Please look through all the photos and feel free to ask any questions. Thank you for your interest.
