Here is an opportunity to own a rare example of the early 3.2 Carrera 911s. This is a factory optioned Widebody 911, commonly known by the option code M491. The M491 option gave Porsche enthusiasts a chance to have what was essentially a 911 Turbo (930) with the reliability of Porsche’s new and bulletproof 3.2 engine and 915 gearbox. The option included full turbo-look bodywork including the wider steel fender flares, larger air dam, and, large turbo spoiler. It also included full turbo suspension and brakes which are a great difference over the base Carreras. The wider track gave the M491 a tighter feeling in high speed corners, while offering the iconic styling of the 930 Turbo 911s. Total production of the M491 coupes was right at 1397 units between 1984 and 1989. Of that total production, only 353 came to the US market in 1984. As a $15k option new not many of these cars were sold. Today they are highly sought after and a great addition to a Porsche collection.

This individual car was sold new in California in November of 1984. It is a late production car covered in Grand Prix White and optioned with body color matching 16” Fuch wheels. The car originally had a black leather interior but was later upgraded to a full tan leather interior giving the car a softer and brighter feeling inside. It is a very stunning color combination. The car made its way from California to Texas and then eventually to Kentucky. There is lots of history and documentation that takes the car back to new. Most of the owners were long term Porsche Club of America members which is documented in the records. Meticulous maintenance and repair records show how well this car has been taken care of. No expenses were spared in keeping the car up to typical Porsche enthusiast’s conditions. This car operates very much like a new car and the new owner will have years of enjoyment.

The car currently has just over 105k documented miles which is relatively low mileage for a Porsche of this era. It is accident free and has the Carfax and multiple auto checks to document this. The body is in beautiful rust free condition. The car had a repaint in the original Grand Prix White back in 2008. Many of the seals were replaced at the same time. The paint is very gorgeous, panels are straight, and the gaps all fit well. I have found one very small scuff in the paint on the driver’s side door however it is very hard to see. The doors, trunk, and engine lid all open and shut firmly as Porsches of this era are known for. All of the glass, lights as well as rubber components are in like new condition. Underneath, the floor is very straight and the undercoating is excellent condition. Fuel tank and skid plate are not beat or scraped up. It has a very presentable interior that appears new with little wear.. The leather is all very soft and free of tears. Carpets are clean and full with no worn or stained spots. The dash is not cracked and the headliner is very tight. All of the electronics on the car work well the sunroof and cruise control.

This car is a pleasure to drive. The 3.2 engine and 915 transmission operate flawlessly. Many say that the 3.2 Carrera engine was the most bulletproof evolution of the early 911s. This engine has been kept very much stock with the exception of a K&N air filter. It starts up easily with no hesitation or smoke. The power is strong and consistent and pulls the car quickly to high speeds. The car still includes its complete front mounted oil cooling system and there are no overheating issues whatsoever. It recently had a service including a valve adjustment. It is also nice to note that this 3.2 is extremely dry underneath and well sealed. The 915 transmission was completely rebuilt 2k miles ago and the clutch was replaced at the same time. With that being said, it shifts up and down with little effort and no grinding issues. The suspension on the car is extremely tight and feels great. There are lots of maintenance records referring to keeping the suspension in new working order as well as upgrades for the spirited driver. New Bilstein HD shocks were installed which are actually a standard upgrade for the M491 cars. The car has Elephant Racing Polybroze bushings around the entire car as well as upgraded hollow torsion bars and adjustable spring plates. These are all additions to the car that enhance the performance without sacrificing ride quality or reliability. One of the greatest factory aspects of the M491 cars were the coveted 930 big brakes. The turbo brakes are very very strong and will bring this car to a confident stop even at the highest speeds. Pads and rotors have been recently replaced along with braided brake lines. Overall, this car offers a driving experience well above that of the standard Carreras.

This is one of the nicest and well maintained Carreras I have came in contact with. It is ready to be driven, enjoyed, and shown at more Porsche events. It is matching numbers and comes with the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. There are years and years of documentation and included is the owner’s manual, warranty book, all factory option stickers, tools, jack and spare tire. There is also a set of additional Carrera script mats for the interior. The M491 has lots of investment potential and is sure to further appreciate in the ever strong Porsche market. The new owner can rest assured this car has been well kept for and will offer years of driving pleasure. I encourage any and all questions on this vehicle.
