Very rare, ultra luxury vehicle of the 1970’s! One of less than 400 produced, professionally hand built in Surry, England! All aluminum body, fully independent suspension, modern 4.2L Jaguar drivetrain, power steering, power disc brakes, chrome wire wheels, and more! An outstanding car with only 12,000 original miles!
Many cars have been duplicated in replica form for several decades, to the likes of famous Shelby Cobra, Auburn Boattail Speedster, and Porsche 356 and 550. Fewer yet can stake claim to the beautifully shaped bodies of vintage Jaguars. In 1972, Panther Westwinds Ltd. was founded by Robert Jankel who set out to design an accurate reproductions of the Jaguar SS100 with a personality of its own on the grounds of the fabled Brooklands racetrack of Byfleet, Surrey in England. The results are nothing short of remarkable, and more so, proven to provide superior luxury appointment and outstanding road capabilities! It was marketed as the model J-72, and by some sources, only 368 units were produced through 1981 making them very exclusive to own today! Further yet, many were meant to stay in their home country making them right-hand-drive. Very few made their way to the United States in LHD form, and we feel this 12,000 mile example is the finest in the country.
Beginning with a rigid, hand built rectangular steel ladder chassis, Panther Westwinds coach built the all-aluminum body with Rolls Royce type precision. The fully independent chassis rides on front & rear coil springs, front anti-sway bar, Adwest rack & pinion power steering, servo-assisted power brakes with front discs, and 15” chrome wire spoke wheels wrapped in radial tires. Under the hood of our example is a Jaguar sourced 4.2L DOHC Inline 6 cylinder engine fitted with twin Zenith 175 CD-2 carburetion to produce an estimated 190 horsepower and 304 lb. ft. of torque! Options include Borg Warner 3-speed automatic transmission, high back bucket seats with headrests, seatbelts, rear luggage rack, Plexiglas wind wings, rear-mounted spare tire, sealed beam headlamps encased in larger 1930’s style chrome housings, turn signals, locking glove box, louvered hood, 2-speed electric wipers, twin outside mirrors, and flip-up style gas cap. A true ultra-luxury exotic, evocative of the earlier classic, with the benefits of modern engineering and mechanics.
The gorgeous lines of this automobile are breathtaking and the minor enhancements, such as the air intake snorkel to accommodate the 4.2L’s carburetion system really add to the appeal! Finished in Olde English White with Red hand painted pinstripes highlighting the body lines, and an interior covered in Connelly hides in matching Red Leather, deep pile wool carpets, with a Burl Walnut dash nicely displaying the instrumentation. You will find only minor wear visible throughout this pampered example, showing only a couple of minor rock chips on the exterior while the interior shows in fine condition with no rips or tears and just the beginnings of any signs of patina. The black cloth top remains in very good condition, and it comes with original side curtains and storage bags. The chrome wire wheels are wrapped in newer radial tires measuring 225/75R15. The entire catalytic exhaust system was replaced for new in January 2018, as well as a new brake master cylinder and fresh DOT 3 fluid. The engine continues to start easily, and it truly drives like a modern Jaguar of the 1980’s. An elegant car that remains a very distinctive automobile today, hand crafted in England, that is ready to be shown or driven! Please feel welcome to call with questions or offers.
