1965 Shelby Cobra 289 FIA Description

In 1964 Carrol Shelby build 16 special Cobras for enduro racing labeled the 289 FIA. FIA is a sanctioning body in Europe similar to the SCCA and NASCAR for long distance racing, (eg Lemans). Modifications include a hood scoop, fender flares, oil cooler duct, quicklift jack brakets and oversize filler cap resulting in the best appearing of the 3 cobra body styles. The last 2 original FIAs sold at auction brought $1.5 Million, (Gordon Johncooks, Indy 500 winner) and $1.9...million at auction in England. This car built in 1995 in Tempe, Arizona by North American Fiberglass. NAF has been credited as the most authentic reproduction at the time. The English Compomotive faux knockoff wheels closely replicate the original Hallibrands. The body is as close to exact as possible as it was taken off the original bucks. The dash board with VDO gauges closely resemble the original as does the wood aluminum spoke steering wheels. This vehicle was factory built by NAF. Additionally, it has always been garage kept and the factory paint is still in good condition. The engine is a streetable 302 ford with an Edelbrock manifold and a single Holley 4 barrel carburetor, followed by a Ford 5 speed manual transmission. The front suspension is a modified coilover 5 bolt Ford with disc brakes. The rear is a 8.8 Ford live axle with trailing arms, coilover shocks and drum brakes. Another upgrade is the Tilton brake/ clutch pedal assembly and master cylinders as used in many race cars. The currents owner states that this vehicle is very similar to the authentic 289 Cobras but with a much improved front suspension.
