1967 Shelby Description

1967 SHELBY GT500

Up for sale is my 1967 Shelby GT500 #0759. It is listed in the Shelby Registry and has had several SAAC members as previous owners (the last owner had it for 28 years). History and specifics on the car are as follows:

Car was completed by Shelby American Inc. in Los Angeles on 2/17/1967 and shipped on 3/2/1967 to Ron’s Ford Sales in Bristol, TN. Car has been a Southern Car it’s entire life with no rust anywhere on the car. The car spent it’s early years in and around Gastonia, North Carolina and did a bit of drag racing (I have a few old pictures of it from the mid 70’s). It then had a fender bender around 1978 on the right passenger fender, as that looks to have been replaced with a Ford NOS Fender. All other Sheet metal, floors, etc. look to be original. The car then changed hands to the first SAAC owner and he restored the car from 1982-1987. The first thing that was done was to pull out the original 428 Police Interceptor motor and replace it with the more aggressive 427 Side Oiler. This 1968 427 was purchased NOS in 1983 from Holman Automotive (known as Holman and Moody in the 60s and 70s). The block is the cross-bolt, side oiler that had a blue and white stripe painted on the side of the block which indicated its tolerances were close enough for racing. A low mileage 427 forged steel crank with cross drilled oil passages was installed. Standard 427 Lemans connecting rods were used along with aftermarket SPS rod cap screws. The pistons were custom made by Venolia with a 10.5 to 1 compression. The entire rotating assembly was balanced by Holman Automotive in Charlotte, NC. The cam is the standard 427 cam. The heads are standard C8OE Cobra Jet heads with a standard valve job and new springs. The exhaust ports are shaped to increase flow and stock 428 Cobra Jet exhaust manifolds were used. The remainder of the exhaust system is CJ with the big H pipe and the resonators and transverse mufflers. The intake manifold is a police interceptor aluminum single four barrel in stock appearance.

The transmission is a large input shaft top loader with the close ratio gears. The trans was rebuilt in 1987 with all small parts replaced and all synchro rings replaced. The shifter is a standard Hurst, obviously not stock but a drastic improvement over stock Ford shifter. The clutch is stock as is the pressure plate, the bell housing is a steel unit made by Ansen. The front housing of the trans was machined to fit the scatter shield which is an early version for use with the trans with smaller front housings. Drive shaft is stock and rear end is a 4 pinion 3.50:1 ration positive traction unit which was purchased new in 1985.

The front suspension is stock Ford. All parts were replaced during the original restoration. The front springs were new. The rear suspension is also stock with bushings replaced during the original restoration. It has NOS 390 GT springs. KONI shocks are on all 4 corners. I would characterize the underneath as completely original and unrestored, except new gas tank, all new suspension and brakes, new exhaust system, etc. Basically new or rebuilt drive train, suspension and mechanicals.

The radio works but the speaker is not installed. The aerial is mounted along the lower inside frame rail. The seat belts and seats are original. The carpet is new. The instruments and virtually the entire interior are all are original.

The car saw many SAAC (Shelby American Automobile Club) events after the restoration from 1988 to 1991.

The car then changed hands in 1992 to the second SAAC owner. He had the entire car taken down to the sheet metal and repainted in 1996 and I have the original receipt and comments on the car and it’s condition that will be part of the documentation. This past owner had the work done in MS, as that is where the car resided in the 1990’s through mid 2007. The last owner then retired, moving himself and the car to VA where it has lived until 2019. This owner drove the car sparingly, although he was religious about changing the oil once per year as well as driving it in and out of the garage or up and down the street each month to keep things well lubed and in good condition. Each year the car got cleaned and waxed and the car NEVER has seen rain since sometime back in the mid 1980’s. I was told that the car has less than 800 miles on the motor since restoration and the Odometer now reads 56794 (looks to be original mileage based on SAAC Registry and information from previous owners). Everything on the car works as expected. Lights, Horn, Signals, Interior lights, Wipers, etc. All Windows roll up and down well and there are absolutely no issues with the car whatsoever. The car looked to have been restored well during its restoration in the late 80’s.

Since I wanted to drive the car a bit more than the last owner, I decided to “freshen” a few things. I decided to change the water pump, all the belts and hoses and “go though” the car from front to back. The car runs amazingly well, but I wanted to ensure it would be reliable to drive to any car show with NO ISSUES.

As far as looking at the car objectively, here is what I can share:

Paint is in Exceptional condition and rates about a 9 compared to original. Paint has 4 tiny nicks that I have taken pictures of. Otherwise original Lime Gold with 3 base coats and 4 clear coats as noted on the receipt from the folks that painted it in 1996.

Interior I would rate about 8.5. All original except carpets. Interior looks very nice and has all original belts, etc. Car was signed by Carroll Shelby himself at a SAAC event (can’t find the picture on that one, but I may have it around somewhere).

Mechanical is a 9.0 and would be better, except for age of original restoration.

Underside about a 6.5. Original and driver quality underside, but not close to concourse. Still has red oxide paint and all original floors, pans, etc. Only thing I could find that was replaced was right passenger front fender.

I really don’t want to sell the car, but I was furloughed by my company and think it best to put a bit of cash in the bank during these uncertain times.
