1953 Studebaker Commander V-8 4-Door Sedan
1953 Studebaker Commander DeLuxe Description
I am listing this Studebaker for Van Willis as my friend Jack Willis passed away earlier this spring. I have traveled many miles in this car and found it to be a solid trouble free performer. Jack was president of the Rock River Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club for 17 years and this car was used on many a spring and fall tour.
Positive elements:
The car has recently had the chrome on the front grille and emblems redone. Recently added accessories are the fender skirts and fog lights. The chrome on the tail lights is very good and the blue dot lenses were added sometime back.
Driver Quality:
The interior is nice with good seats (see photos), door panels are nice (see photos), the dash looks good and all the gauges are in working order. The headliner is old but in good shape. The glass is clear except were noted in the defects section below. The exterior paint is above average except were noted in the defects section below. The front and back bumpers are driver quality, with light scratches and some pitting and crazing especially on the front bumper (see photos), but look real good from ten feet, no rust. The head light rings have very light pitting, but look good from a distance.
Flaws:
The windlace on the front of the "C" pillar is tattered from entry and exist of the front seat, both sides. The rest of the windlace is OK. The passenger side rear window has some separation of the safety glass near the bottom (see photos), mostly unnoticeable unless a close examination is made. The drivers side window has a small crack near the top which I did not photograph, because I didn't see it until I rolled the window down, when I was putting the car away. The fit and form of Studebaker's is not great, and if care is not used, the trunk will hit on one side or the other. This car has evidence of that with the paint being chipped on the passenger side rear qtr. (see photo). The kick panel on the drivers side is showing some rust bleeding through, which would indicate that while the structure is intact, this area is rusting under the panel and needs to be addressed before it gets worse.
