1977 Toyota Celica three-owner car that features a host of cosmetic and mechanical modifications performed. Repainted by a previous owner many years ago, a few exterior modifications including smaller bumpers and a set of period-correct aftermarket wheels. Mechanical upgrades include a ported and balanced 22R inline-four fitted with a 20R head, Crane camshaft, and a pair of Mikuni 44mm sidedraft carburetors with a Doug Thorley tri-y stainless header mated to a Borla exhaust. Additional work performed included the installation of a w55 5-speed transmission from a Toyota Supra, a new Centerforce clutch, new stainless brake lines, and Prothane suspension bushings. The car runs well.
Repainted by the previous owner in a House of Kolor metallic red, the older finish presents well in the provided imagery. To unify some minor disparity between the the hood, A-pillars, and the rest of the car. Two slight dings on the roof as well as some slight waviness on the door skins that is noticeable upon close inspection.
Brightwork and trim remain complete and are accompanied by a pair of chrome "smiley" bumpers from and older Celica that replace the visually heavier original units, providing a cleaner and more cohesive look. The original bumpers remain with the car and are included in the sale. Additional modifications include the installation of a set of period 14″ Supreme multi-spoke wheels that are wrapped in newer rubber.
The refurbished interior shows well and remains unmodified apart from the installation of a center console from a Celica GT. Systems remain fully functional with all instruments, controls, and electrics working as designed.
The original seat skins, door panels, and and dash were refurbished and remain in good condition, though a couple of bubbles have developed on the dash surfacing, likely a result of off-gassing. The car is fitted with a w55 5-speed transmission from a later Supra that is paired with a new Centerforce clutch that is said to shift without strain or vibration.
The newly-built, ported, and balanced 22R inline-four has been fitted with a 20R head from improved flow, a Crane camshaft, a pair of Mikuni 44mm sidedraft carburetors, and a Doug Thorley tri-y stainless header mated to a Borla exhaust. Cooling is addressed with a Koyo aluminum radiator accompanied by a pair of Bosch cooling fans. The modifications were devised to maintain a balance between performance and reliability increasing power well beyond stock levels to an estimated 140 horsepower. With just over 200 miles covered since the build, the motor remains in its break-in period and has yet to exceed 3k rpm, though the seller notes the car idles well and displays strong power in the restricted rev range.
The front brakes retain the original calipers and are accompanied by new rotors, pads, and stainless braided brake lines with the rear drums receiving new pads and liners. Suspension upgrades include new springs that give the car a slightly lower stance than stock, shocks, struts, and Prothane bushings at the various connection points.
Lift shots highlight a clean and tidy underside that remains free of rust or bubbling and was originally covered in a thick layer of rubberized undercoating when acquired by the seller. Following the removal of the undercoating, two uniform coats of POR 15 were applied to the entire undercarriage, hood underside and engine areas with a denser coating of rust inhibitor applied to the trunk area for better protection.
