1985 Toyota Other DX Description

For your consideration.......

1985 Toyota Hilux LN-65

4x4 DX 5 Speed Long Bed

Factory 2LT Turbo 2.4 liter diesel

One of approximately 180 of this flavor imported.

Special ordered back in May of 1985 to a dealership in Bend Oregon.

279,421 chassis miles. Drivetrain rebuilt at 200,xxx

Clean Oregon Title in my name with 'Diesel' as the noted fuel.

Engine-

1st generation roller rocker 2L-T

CT-20 turbo running 10 psi for longevity.

I get between 20-27 mpg depending on the terrain and my right foot. No exaggeration. Feels like a 22r with much more low end torque.

Rebuilt from block up with new head, roller rockers, valves, pistons, rings etc. Never overheated, the previous owner wanted to start from scratch and spent considerable expense rebuilding this motor. I have the receipts for all of this work.

Injection pump and injectors rebuild at Diesel Fuel Injection Services. Stock fuel settings and boost.

Spare stock Denso injection pump from a very low mile truck is included.

Clutch replaced 25,000 miles ago.

Rotella oil used at regular service intervals.

Factory air and fuel filters replaced as needed.

Wilson switch for glow plugs. 10v plugs Bosch plugs replaced a year ago.

Starter rebuilt by Auto Body Electric in Portland OR

Alternator rebuilt with Toyota parts last year.

Fan clutch, timing belt & oil seals replaced in the last 6 months.

Oil pan gasket replaced in the last year (with correct Toyota part)

Block heater is installed as per all NA (Canada spec) trucks. I have never needed it.

This is a non computer controlled, mechanically injected diesel with an easily modded pump and a single solenoid to shut off the fuel.

It doesn't get more 'analog' than this.

Transmission & Drivetrain-

Factory power steering.

5 speed W-56 with diesel specific bell housing and HD clutch.

Manual part time 2.28 transfer case. Extra parts 2.28 case is included with truck. Great to rebuild as a spare or upgrade to better crawl ratio.

Solid axles front and rear with stock 4.10 gearing.

Open front differential with rebuilt Aisin locking hubs.

Rear axle from 1990 4Runner with wider track and disc brakes & Toyota E-locker rear differential. Wired with stock wiring harness to momentary switch in dash with warning light. A truly awesome upgrade that makes this truck extremely capable at the flick of a switch.

Ring gear armor and e-brake delete on rear axle housing. New rear axle seals and bearings installed during e-locker modification.

Extended diff breathers.

Sky's transfer case e-brake. Much stronger than the stock drum version and great for use on trails.

4" Trail Gear lift springs (with extra arch to driver side to account for extra weight of the motor) poly bushings & 2" over stock greasable shackles.

All spring lift. No sketchy lift blocks or body lift. Was built to have exceptional flex while remaining a daily driver.

Skyjacker M95 oversized monotube shocks with custom lower mounts for long travel. (Excellent performance & zero fade)

LSPV arm delete with turnbuckle conversion for micro adjustable rear brake performance.

Trail Gear Drop pitman arm with upgraded TRE's.

Sway bar & traction bar delete yields tremendous flex with predictable steering.

FJ80 brake booster upgrade.

New center support bearing.

New u joints along entire rear driveshaft.

Extended brake lines front and rear.

Custom low profile rear bumper with shackle points. Mounts directly into frame. Best departure angle I've ever seen in a long bed.

TJM HD front winch bull bar. This is heavy and stout. Custom 1/4" plate mounts.

Smittybuilt XRC 9k Gen 2 winch with synthetic line. Plenty of pull and quite light.

Factory dual battery system with 6 month old Optima Yellow Top batteries.

Hella H4 headlight upgrades.

Hella 500 driving lights wired to aux rocker switch in dash.

Snorkel imported from Australia in correct position for optimal airbox and turbo airflow. Made a noticeable difference in the engine temps.

2 year old BFG All Terrain KM 33 x 10.5 tires on 1988 15" Toyota SR-5 alloys. Spare 31" All Terrain on same rim mounted under bed.

Custom high flow exhaust with no muffler. Turbo spools immediately and truck is below 100 db at WOT.

Spare engine gaskets and various extra relays and small parts come with truck.

Body & Frame-

I searched for a long time to find the perfect example and have been slowly building this to suit my tastes for the last 4 years. Lived its entire life in the PNW out of winter road salt. The paint is Toyota Medium Blue 857 and there has been some touch up over the years but always the factory color. The photos do the talking and I'm happy to get buyers any extra photos as needed.

You'll notice a lack of hastily applied black spray paint to hide anything. I've applied an oil/wax mix to the frame before each winter of my ownership and it has done the job.

This is an honest and well taken care of example.

I know these trucks inside and out and am happy to explain any and all nuance to serious buyers. No smoke and mirrors here. I want this truck to go to an enthusiast who will enjoy her as I have. This is not a garage queen. It is a purpose built 4x4 to go have fun with. That being said, any diesel Toyota in America is rare and this is an amazing example of the best era of mini truck.

Steel rear rack with expanded metal rear window protection and removable center and rear supports.

I fabricated a soft top out of a military tarp that is great for the summer months. Very light and allows tremendous carrying capacity.

If the buyer does not want the rack and or soft top, I will gladly remove them before sale.

Full disclosure, there is the usual bed rust this generation suffers from. It is mostly on the passenger side and honestly is not worth repairing as these will continue to slowly corrode over time no matter what you do. I was searching for a clean non rusted long bed to no avail and the pickings are slim these days. Replacing the bed sides would net you a long term solution. Some trail scratches and a couple dings mark mostly the passenger side of the bed. I have tried to show all of these areas in the photos. The cab sheet metal is nearly perfect save a dent on the vent cover above the hood from an errant tree branch a couple years ago.

There was preventative POR-15 applied to all problem spots both in the bed and in the cab floor as evidenced in the photos. Cab and frame are in great shape. Shock and body mounts are solid. I'm happy to send along photos of classic trouble spots to any serious buyer.

Interior-

The interior is all original and in great shape for the vintage. Rare stock altimeter/ tilt-meter combo. Cloth bench seat shows well as does headliner and carpet. I've replaced both window regulators in my ownership. Has the vent windows. No power anything. Bottle jack and tool bag are intact.

Cheap stereo head unit is due for replacement as the CD function is errant at best. New stereo speakers installed in factory locations (and not in the damn door cards!) Diesel specific instrument cluster and hand throttle. No AC, as with all DX models. This does have nice factory exterior chrome trim package, including grille and windshield trim. I have some extra dash odds and ends that come with the truck as well.

Bottom Line-

Mechanically this truck needs nothing to be a daily driver. High steer is probably the next upgrade needed at this point. A longer front drive shaft would be advised at some point ( I installed a 1.5" spacer and have had no issues with binding). The birfields are probably due for a renew in the next year.

The engine is in excellent shape and the valves were checked when I replaced the oil seals and timing belt.

This Hilux is economical and reliable and is easily the most capable 'stock' vehicle I have owned. Good for non stop grins and never ending thumbs up. Enjoy everyones general bewilderment as to why it sounds like there is a diesel under your hood. This is the truck the rest of the world got to purchase for decades after the 2 year stint here. If you understand the rarity you can appreciate the appeal of owning a Hilux.

I have a folder of relevant receipts and documentation and will gladly talk anyones ear off regarding the truck I swore I would never sell.

50+ high resolution photos and videos are available to serious parties.

$12,000 USD or best reasonable offer.

Serious buyers only. Located in Portland, Oregon.

I reserve the right to end the auction at any time due to local listing.
