Wrapping a sporty 6-cylinder and smooth automatic transmission in all-original aesthetics, this 19K mile Supra is a unique cruiser that’s ripe for the Survivor Class!
BODYWORK
During the ‘80s, automakers developed heightened aerodynamics that brought sharp angles, clean profiles and an array of smoother surfaces to the entire passenger car market. For the Supra, that meant a classic fastback shape which rode on a whittled stance. And although Toyota’s frugality remained obvious, a mix of chiseled lines and aggressive bolt-ons allowed the brand’s more premium offerings to develop unique identities. This impressively clean coupe wears an original coat of Black pigment that holds a nice shine despite roughly 30 years of reflection. The car’s finish is largely free of fading and imperfections. And, as you would expect from a low-mileage niche offering, panel fitment is solid all around.
ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN
Toss the car’s lightweight hood and you’ll find a 3.0 liter 7M-GE 6-cylinder that, in factory guise, produces a nice, round 200 horsepower. Torque flows through a tough Aisin-Warner A340E 4-speed, which is bolted to a factory-spec, fully independent suspension. That suspension hangs in a well-preserved undercarriage that appears to be mostly original. That chassis turns thanks to power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. At the corners, factory-spec power disc brakes produce increased stopping performance thanks to first-year ABS technology. There’s a single-pipe exhaust system that appears to have been replaced from the converter back. And everything rides on factory-spec wheels, which spin 225/50R16 Yokohama S.drives around locking lug nuts. As you can see from our photos, the car’s solid floors and fresh engine bay belie its 28-year survivor status. And, even though initial reviews poked fun at this Toyota’s ‘touring’ demeanor, it can certainly prove its merit on most twisted backroads.
INTERIOR
Behind the doors, a weather-free interior offers a great balance between daily and high performance needs. Original bucket seats are firm and supportive, showing minimal overall wear. The car’s stylish, 2-tone dash hangs analog telemetry above a vintage tape deck. At the base of that dash, a molded console centers a simple shifter between an old school phone and T.E.M.S. shock absorber buttons. The carpet, headliner, door panels and other soft surfaces retain most of their showroom charm thanks to an easy, well-maintained life. In front of the driver, a tan, Supra-branded steering wheel spins buttons for the car’s standard cruise control. And behind the passengers, a small cargo hold features enough room for a weekend’s worth of luggage.
