THE TOYOTA HAS ALWAYS LIVED WITHIN A 25 MILE RADIUS OF THAT DEALER SINCE NEW AND PURCHASED ORIGINALLY BUY A LOCAL INSURANCE COMPANY OWNER. THE WHEELS WERE SHOWING AGE AND THE 70'S CHROME WAS STARTING TO FLAKE SO WE FOUND THIS SUPER NICE SET OF ORIGINAL TOYOTA WHEELS ON EBAY COMPLETE WITH PRISTINE ORIGINAL CAPS, LUGS AND BEAUTY RINGS.
WE ARE ALWAYS ON THE HUNT FOR CLEAN CLASSICS BUT ESPECIALLY ORIGINAL SURVIVORS AND CLASSIC TRUCKS, SO THIS TRUCK BEING THE PERFECT COMBO OF THE TWO WE HAD TO TAKE IT HOME WITH US. THE ORIGINAL AND SECOND OWNER CLEARLY LOVED THIS TRUCK JUST AS WE HAVE. NICE SOLID OPENING AND CLOSING DOORS FREE OF ANY DOOR SAG THAT GIVE THAT SOLID POP SOUND WHEN THE DOOR HANDLE IS PULLED AND THAT BEAUTIFUL DEEP VAULT LIKE SOLID SOUND EVERY CAR GUYLOVES TO HEAR WHEN CLOSING THE DOOR ON A CLASSIC. THE STEERING IS TIGHT AND STRAIGHT AND IT HAS A VERY SOLID AND SOUND DRIVE IN THE CAB FREE OF RATTLES. THIS HILUX IS IN AMAZING SOLID AND UNTOUCHED CONDITION FROM TOP TO BOTTOM IN NICE SOLID CONDITION.
BODY-THE BODYON THIS HILUX IS TRULY WHATDREW ME IN AND WHAT I FEEL IS THE MOST INCREDIBLE PART OF THIS TRUCK. THIS ERA OF TOYOTA WAS NOT BUILT WITH THE THICKEST SHEET METAL AND NOT BUILT WITH THE INTENT TO LAST FOREVER, SO TO FIND ONE THIS CORRECT, CLEAN AND ORIGINAL WAS EXCITING. THE PAINT IS MOSTLY THE ORIGINAL AND HAS ALL THE RIGHT LOOK AND AGE MOST OF US ARE LOOKING FOR ON A SURVIVOR TO DRIVE AS IS OR TO CUSTOMIZE INTO THAT DROPPED SHOP TRUCK BUILD. IT HAS A BEAUTIFUL EQUALLY AGED PAINT THAT STILL HAS A KILLER GLOSSY BRIGHT ORANGE SHINE. IN THE PILE OF RECEIPTS I FOUND PAPER WORK FROM A BODY SHOP IN THE 80'S TO REPAINT THE BED FOR A WHOPPING 200 BUCKS, BUT THE TAILGATE AND THE REST OF THE TRUCK IS THE ORIGINAL 1978 PAINT. THIS HAS VERY SOLID BODY WITH NO MAJOR RUST, DENTS OR ACCIDENTS TO THE BODY. THE INSIDE OF THE BED HAS RECEIVED A SPRAY LINER BY THE SECOND OWNER ALONG WITH THE TAILGATE THAT IS PERFECT AND SHUTS, CLOSES AND LATCHES WITH ITS ORIGINAL LOCK MECHANISM WITH EASE. THE AGED PAINT AND THE GLOSS LOOK WITH THAT PERFECT PATINA PAINT WEAR AROUND THE BODY AND ORIGINAL PAINTED TOYTOA SCRIPT ON THE BACK LOOKS KILLER WITH ORIGINAL HUGGER ORANGE LOOKING PAINT. ALL GLASS IS ORIGINAL AND THE FRONT WINDSHIELD HAS SOME CRACKING ON TOP RIGHT SIDE. THIS 78 WAS FULLY OPTIONED FROM THE FACTORY WITH CUSTOM DELUXE EXTERIOR TRIM PKG. YOU CAN TELL BY ONE GLANCE HOW SOLID AND HONEST THIS TRUCK IS BY THE PICS ON THE TOP OF THE ROCKERS, BOTTOM OF DOORS, FLOORBOARDS, BODY MOUNTS, UNDERSIDE OF ROCKERS, CAB CORNERS, BOTTOM SIDE OF BED, REAR BED CORNERS, FIRE WALL, CORE SUPPORT, AND ALL THE OTHER HIGH RUST AREAS OF THE FIRST GENERATION TOYOTA'S. THE RAIN GUTTERS ON THE TOP OF THE CAB ARE IN INCREDIBLY CLEAN CONDITION THAT STILL HAS NICE ORIGINAL PAINT THAT SHOWS THIS WAS A GARAGED AND WELL LOVED TRUCK ALONG WITH THE NICE CONDITION OF THE OUTER RUBBER DOOR GLASS SWEEPS AND INNER WEATHER STRIPPING THAT ARE BOTH IN AMAZING 40 YEAR OLD CONDITION. THIS CLASSIC IS VERY CLEAN AND STRAIGHT, BUT CLEARLY SHOWS AGE WITH 40 YEAR OLD PAINT WEAR WITH SMALL CHIPS AND LITTLE SURFACE SCRATCHES, BUT TO ME THAT ADDS THE DESIRE AD VALUE OF THIS TRUCK. THE PLASTIC FRONT NOSE PIECE HAS AGED TO A SLIGHTLY LIGHTER SHADE OF ORANGE SINCE IT IS PLASTIC, THE PLASTIC CENTER GRILLE HAS SOME SUN AGING AS DOES THE BLACK TAIL LIGHT SURROUND BEZEL AND THE RUBBER AROUND THE WINDSHIELD. THE BOTTOM AREAS AFTER THE TIRES HAVE SMALL STONE CHIPPING ALNG WITH ON THE HOOD IN PLACES. THE DRIVER BOTTOM OF FRONT FENDER NEAR THE BUMPER LOOKS TO HAVE BUMPED SOME THING IN THE PAST ALONG WITH THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER OF THE BED THAT BROKE THE CIRCULAR REFLECTOR LENS. THE BED RAILS HAVE SOME HOLES IN THE TOP FROM THE CANOPY BEING INSTALLED, THEY BOTH HAVE SOME SMALL SCRATCHES AND CHIPS THAT YOU WILL ALSO FIND IN PLACES AROUND THE ENTIRE TRUCK FROM FOUR DECADES OF ROAD AND USE. THERE IS SOME AREAS OF SURFACE RUST WHERE PAINT HAS BEEN CHIPPED OFF NEAR THE MIRRORS, FRONT BUMPER, UNDER THE BED RAILS, NEAR THE SIDE HOOKS OF THE BED AND AT THE BOTTOM BED BODY SEEM. A SMALL AREA ON DRIVER BED SIDE ABOUT THE SIDE OF A QUARTER IS CHIPED AND SURFACED RUSTED WITH A TINY PIN HOLE THAT IS LOCATED JUST ABOVE THE WHEEL WELL AND THERE IS ALSO VERY SMALL AREA OF CANCER IN THE ENGINE BAY ON THE PASSENGER INNER FENDER WELL JUST UNDER THE HOOD HINGE, BUT ODDLY THAT LITTLE PIECE IS IT. I HAVE MANY CLOSE UP PICS OF THE TRIM AND PAINT IN AND IT CAN ALSO BEEN SEEN IN THE VIDEO ALONG WITH ANY WEARIN THE PAINT, BUT IF MORE ARE NEEDED LET ME KNOW. THIS WELL LOVED AND CARED FOR CLASSIC IS VERY HARD TO FIND NOT ONLY IN UN-MOLESTED ORIGINAL CONDITIO, BUT VERY HARD TO FIND ONE OF THIS CALIBER IN THIS BEAUTIFUL AND SOLID CONDITION LIKE THIS LITTLE HILUX BEAUTY :)
INTERIOR-INSIDE IT IS ALL ORIGINAL AND BESIDES THE ORIGINAL CARPET BEING PULLED IT IS ALL 1978 AND INTACT. IT HAS THE HARD TO FIND FACTORY SPORT BUCKET SEATS WITH FULL CONSOLE, DELUXE DOOR PANELS, AM/FM STEREO AND TACH DASH.. THE DASH IS NEAR MINT WITH NO CRACKS ON THE TOP DASH PAD, THE METAL PART OF DASH STILL HAS NICE FACTORY PAINT, THE STEREO IS INTACT, BUT DOES NOT WORK, BUT I HAVEN'T LOOKED AT WHY EITHER SO COULD BE SIMPLE. THE BLACK GAUGE BEZEL IS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE ALONG WITH THE PLASTICS AROUND THE STEREO WITH THE TOYOTA SIGNIA, BUT THERE IS A COUPLE HAIR LINE CRACKS NEAR THE CLIMATE CONTROL LEVERS, ALL GAUGES WORK INCLUDING THE TACHOMETER. THE DOOR PANELS ARE FREE OF ANY SUN FADING, CRACKS OR CHIPS IN THE VINYL, BUT THE LITTLE STORAGE POUCHES ARE A LITTLE LOOSE AND STRETCHED AND THE PASSENGER INNER DOOR HANDLE HAS ONE END CHIPPED OFF, BUT I BOUGHT A NICE BLACK SET OFF EBAY THAT COME WITH:) THE INNER GLOVE BOX IS IN PRFECT SHAPE WITH ORIGINAL DECAL AND THIS HAS BEEN A CLEAN NON SMOKER SINCE NEW WITH A CLEAN ASH TRAY AND CIGARETTE LIGHTER THAT STILL WORKS! THE DOORS POP RIGHT OPEN WITH EASEAND SHUT LIKE NEW WITH ONE SOLID SOUND AND NOSAGGING. SIDE WINDOWS ROLL UP AND DOWN EASILY AND THE LOCKS GO UP AND DOWN SMOOTHLY. THE INNER DOOR JAMB AREA, TOP ENTRY AREA OF ROCKERS, DOOR HINGES AND INSIDE AREA OF DOORS ARE IN BEAUTIFUL SHAPE WITH NICE SMOOTH, GLOSSY AND CLEAN ORIGINAL PAINT. THEORIGINAL SUN VISORS ARE IN GOOD SHAPE AND MOVE FREELY AND STAY UP, BUT THE HEADLINER IS LONG GONE AND THE OPEN AREA OF THE CAB WAS PAINTED BLACK AND LOOKS GREAT. THE ORIGINAL CARPET WAS LONG GONE BEFORE WE GOT IT WHICH TO ME WAS A BONUS AS IT WAS THE LONG 70'S STYLE THREADED CARPET THAT DIDNT LAST AND IT LEFT THOSE BEAUTIFUL RUST FREE FLOORS EXPOSED FOR INSPECTION. THERE IS SOME AREAS OF SURFACE RUST BEHIND THE SEATS WHERE THE FACTORY JACK GOES AND SI BOUGHT A USED RUBBER FLOOR MAT FROM A 1976 TOYOTA THAT HAS THE CORRECT ORIGINAL SMAPS THAT SNAP N THE FLOOR BOARD, BUT THE EARLI TRUCKS ONLY HAD A 4SPEED TRANS AND THE HOLE FOR THE SHIFTER IS CLOSER TO THE DASH, BUT IT WAS $200 AND WE HAVE NO USE FOR IT SO IT COMES WITH THE TRUCK. BOTH BUCKET SEATS ARE IN NICE SHAPE FOR THEIR AGE, BUT THE DRIVER SIDE AS SOME BREAK DOWN ON THE INNER AND OUTER MATERIALS OF THE BOTTOM AS SEEN IN THE PICS AND NOT AS COMFORTABLE AS THE PASSENGER SIDE. OVERALL THIS HILUX SHOWS SOME AGE AND A RESTORATION OF THE SEAT AND A NEW CARPET OR FLOOR MAT WOULD BE WHAT THIS TRUCK DESERVES, BUT FOR 40 YEARS OLD SHE'S HELD UP GREAT!
MECHANICAL- THIS LITTLE ORANGE BOMBER PICKUP IS VERY TIGHT AND SOLID MECHANICALLY ANDIS A VERY STRONG AND SMOOTH RUNNER WITH NO HESITATION, TICKING,BIG LEAKS OR MOTOR NOISES. IT DRIVES AND STOPS NICE STRAIGHT AND TIGHT JUST AS IT SHOULD. THIS TRUCK CAME FROM THE FACTORY WITH THE 20R 4CYLINDER MOTOR, 5-SPEED MANUAL TRANS AND POWER DISC BRAKES UP FRONT. WHEN WE FIRST GOT THE TRUCK IT WAS IN STORAGE FOR 2 YEARS, SO WE HAD THE TANK PULLED, DRAINED AND CLEAN, A NEW HIGH VOLUME ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP INSTALLED AND A NICE POLISHED WEBER CARB INSTALLED AND IT REALLY WOKE THIS 20R UP. THE TIRES WERE JUST PURCHASED BY THE SECOND OWNER BEFORE IT WENT INTO STORAGE ALONG WITH A NEW PERFORMANCE RADIATOR, SO WE JUST HAD THE 81 WHEELS BALANCED OUT AND ALL NEW BRAKES ON FRONT INCLUDING CALIPERS. THIS TOYOTA ALWAYS FIRES RIGHT UP RUNS SMOOTH AND IS A BLAST TO DRIVE WHEN THE WEBER OPENS UP AND YOU ROW THROUGH THE 5-SPEED TRANS. THE TRANS HAS A NICE TIGHT SHIFT PATTERN THOUGH ALL 5 GEARS IN UP AND DOWN SHIFTS WITH NO GRINDING, GOES INTO REVERSE EASLIY, DOESN'T SLIP AND THE PEDAL GRABS RIGTH WHERE IT SHOULD. THIS HILUX IS A EASE TO DRIVE ON COUNTRY ROADS OR AT HWY SPEEDS AND DOES NOT LOAD UP IN TRAFFIC AND WOULD TRUST TO TAKE ANYWHERE. THE EXHAUST PIPING IS AMAZINGLY THE ORIGINAL WITH A REPLACEMENT MUFFLER, BUT IT HAS A VERY LITTLE EXHAUST LEAK AND IT REALLY SHOULD ALL BE SWAPPED OUT WITH A NICE NEW FRESH SYSTEM. THE ONLY OTHER ISSUE I HAVE NOTICED IS THE TRUCK DOES NOT SMOKE WHILE DRIVING IT, BUT WHEN WE FIRST GOT IT OUT OF STORAGE IT PUT OUT A LITTLE SMOKE ON FIRE UP, BUT CLEARED OUT. IT STILL WILL SMOKE IF YOU LET IT SIT IN IDLE FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME THEN JUMP IN AND HIT THE GAS, BUT IT MAY JUST NEED TO GET SOME MILES UNDER HER BELT AND BE DRIVEN.
