1982 Toyota Hilux 4x4 Straight Axle Rock Crawler (1 Owner) Description

THE HILUX:Super clean rust free classic 1982 Toyota Hilux 4x4 straight axle regular cab short bed pickup 1 owner truck runs & drives as good as it looks with only 140,900 original miles from Southern, Arizona where it's so dry that vehicles can't rust. It's never been wrecked and been mechanically restored to better than new. Comes with a clean Notarized Arizona title and many thousands of dollars in receipts for valuable new parts & labor. I wouldn't hesitate tojump in this truck and drive it coast to coast feeling confident it wouldn't need anything but gasoline. If you've ever wanted a really nice one the time to buy is when you see it because it won't be around long. Somebody else will snatch it up while you procrastinate.HISTORY:This amazing truck was born in 1982 in a factory in Hamura, Japan. It came to the USA as a JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) import so the actual VIN # JT4RN38K9C0038588 does not compute in eBay's listing system, although the AutoCheck Report I ran had no problem recognizing it. (That report will be included with all the paperwork). This body style ran from 79 to 83 and is known as the 1st Generation 4x4. It's lived its whole life in the South West where it's so dry nothing rusts. It's only had 1 owner for the last 36 years. (I don't consider myself an owner because I've driven it less than 30 miles).
MECHANICALS:This rust free truck features a strong running, recently rebuilt 22R (2.4L SOHC) engine mated to a rugged L52 5 speed manual transmission with a new clutch & flywheel. It comes with live straight axles with open carrier 8 inch differentials, power disc front brakes and manual steering. There's new brake parts on all 4 corners. It runs superbly with a new Weber 32/36 carburetor. This truck'sbeen professionally gone through stem to stern to ensure all bearings, bushings, mechanicals & fluids are fresh with no leaks or issues. It drives down the road like a new truck. Tight, smooth, quiet & peppy without any rattles. Turns heads everywhere it rolls.
22R (2.4L) 4 CylinderLegendarily reliable numbers matching 22R runs like an industrial sewing machine.Starts every time with a click of key. No smoke, no knocks, no leaks, no issues whatsoever. Whisper quiet. Excellent oil pressure. Runs cool, even on 112 degree Tucson summer days. Everything under the hood is stock & most everything is new. Timing chain was inspected at 130k miles during a valve adjustment and although it had only normal wear a new Japanese made timing chain, guides, seals, and gaskets were installed.Since the cylinder head had to be removed to replace the timing chain it was professionally resurfaced with a 3 way valve grind. Next the oil pan was removed and the main & rod bearings were replaced even though they looked like new.
Engine builders have long admired howthese 22R blocks are famous for being hardened with even more nickle content than old American muscle cars, meaning they can be rebuilt almost indefinitely, plus these carbureted 22R engines, having no computer, are particularly desirable for Preppers worldwide because they are immune to the electro magnetic pulses of nuclear war. It's also a fact that the carbureted 22R has better low end torque than the EFI versions. There's a grizzled old man who runs around Tucson with a mint old Hilux similar to this with 650,000 miles. Many examples with over 500,000 miles are common when you search the net. In light of that this one is barely broken in.
5 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION & GEAR DRIVEN TRANSFER CASE:Factory L52 transmission shifts tight and smooth as you'd expect with a new clutch. There's no leaks. When it was out for the clutch job a new input shaft seal was installed as well as a rear main crank seal. The 4x4 works perfect, meaning the 2 speed gear driven top shift transfer case (one of the strongest humans have ever invented) operates concisely as designed.Factory Aisin manual lockout hubs (nobody can dispute they're the toughest factory hubs ever produced) engage like new. This is a Toyota after all. Their 4x4 reliability is legendary.
SUSPENSION,WHEELS & TIRES:A 2.5 inch suspension lift was installed which basically consists of 4 new leaf springs with a larger arch. There's no cheap lift blocks, it's all spring. They allow clearance of 33 inch or larger tires, which in this case features new 33 x 10.5 x 15 BFG Mud Terrain Radials mounted & balanced on 15 x 7 chrome steel rims that were OE off a 1982 FJ60 Land Cruiser. The 4 shocks are new long travel Pro Comps. The new steering stabilizer is a Rancho. The rear brake proportioning valve has a bracket to compensate for the extra height.
DIFFERENTIALS:Both factory differentials are stock with 4.10 gear ratio, open carriers and no leaks. All the gear oil is fresh.
INTERIOR:The interior is super clean and mostly original. All the instrumentation works as designed with the only exception being the horn doesn't work. The factory door card interior panels are in great shape considering the age, although there is some cracking on the front 1/2 of the passenger side panel. Original owner installed a new Grant GT steering wheel as well as newcarpet plus a dash mat carpet. The original vinyl dash pad under it has significant cracking typical from Arizona sun. The factory radio is missing but amazingly the dash bezel around it is not all hacked up like most are in these models. The original owner installed an internal roll cage for added safety. It fits perfect so that no cabin space is impeded. There's padding across the top bar by the sun visors. The heater blows hot. This truck did not come with AC but used stock or aftermarket systems are available.
FRAME & BODY:
This truck has absolutely no rust, zero, none, except for maybe for some minor surface thin patina under the hood where the original paint has flaked off or maybe some surface rust on the exhaust components. Truck has never been wrecked or even wheeled off road in any significant way. It has the 6 foot short bed that is not all beat up like most this age and has had a spray on bedliner. Truck was re-painted last year by original owner and looks great from a distance but up close there are a few small spots with paint cracking. The sheet metal is straight for a 36 year old truck but there are some dents on the tailgate and some dings where the driver door meets the driver fender which are shown in pictures.
INSURANCE:This truck is eligible for historic plates in any State. That also mean it's eligible for Collector Car insurance from outfits like Grundy Worldwide or Haggerty which only costs $12 per month for a $10,000 full coverage policy. That's right, a stated $10k full coverage insurance policy is only $12 per month and, get this, emissions are forever waived.
OH WHAT A FEELING:
There's many reasons Toyota trucks are so legendary worldwide. It's no accident that no matter what part of the world you look at whenever you see news footage of a guerrilla fighter soldier with an AK47 in the back of a pickup it's always a Toyota. Just find a counter-example? That's because Toyota truck reliability is 2nd to none. It's what soldiers count on. That's why Toyota is the only import vehicle ever allowed to compete in NASCAR racing. When Taliban or ISIS fighters tackle US Troops they're not running around in Fords, Dodge or GMC. They're not in Nissans, Subaru, Isuzu or Mitsubishi. No, on the contrary, they're always in Toyota trucks and that's part of the reason their resistance is so stubborn.
Unlike American vehicles of this era, every Toyota Hilux came with a fully boxed steel frame. Not only is the frame boxed square, meaning super strong, but also every nut, bolt and fastener is fine machine threaded. That's why a 36 year old truck like this has no rattles. Virtually every American vehicle has coarse threads throughout and a C-channel frame with only the engine and transmissions having fine machine threads so except for some exceptional rare American vehicles, like Early Ford Broncos and some Jeeps with fully boxed frames, nobody in the USA constructed 4x4's with as much engineering integrity as Toyota. Just for example picture this. The stub outer shaft of this stockToyota Birfield axle is virtually the same thickness (less than 1/16th of an inch different) than the outer stub shaft of a 1 ton Ford Super Duty with a Dana 60 straight front live axle. That's right. This little mini truck less than half the weight of a 1 ton has almost the same front axle diameter!
FLAWS & BLEMISHES:Any 36 year old vehicle that hasn't had a frame off restoration is bound to have a few cosmetic & other minor issues. On the upper right (passenger side) of the windshield there is a crack in the glass. It can't spread because it runs from the top corner to the right side corner and is not illegal in AZ because it does not impede the driver's vision so the driver can barely notice it. There's also a 7mm blemish in the glass, not a stone chip exactly but similar, about 5 inches from the bottom on the driver's side. There's some cracking of the vinyl dash pad underneath the dash carpet cover. There's a postage stamp size section of the plastic steering column bezel that is missing near the turn signal switch that does not affect its performance. There's some cracking of the vinyl on the passenger blue door card. There's also no tire jack nor tools or spare tire. (OEM jack and tools are easily affordable on ebay and I prefer a High-Lift jack anyway). Although it's a rust free truck that's never been wrecked there's a few small spots where paint's cracking and some small dents on the outer skin of the tailgate as well as where the driver's door meets left front fender.
PAPERWORK:
Clean and clear notarized Arizona title is ready to go. Receipts documenting most all the important new parts & labor will be in a packet with the title along with a copy of the Experian Auto Check report.
INVESTMENT:Because of their exceptional engineering and reliability these Toyota Hilux pickups, especially the 22R standard transmission 4x4 live axle trucks like this, only go up in value every year even while you drive them, providing one of the best investments in the automotive world today, bar none. Fact is there will never be another made like them. They're 1 off legends, as important as American Muscle cars, and are getting exceptionally hard to find in this condition. If not now then soon this truck will be a bargain at twice the price.
CONTACT:Email through eBay or Call 52O-Nine 77-O112 for any questions prior to clicking which is highly encouraged.
FEEDBACK:If you have ZERO feedback and are serious about this truckthen before doing anything please be sure to call the number above so we can establish that you're not a squirrel. It won't take more than a couple minutes so please just do it or your offer will be cancelled. Unfortunately this is required due to the notorious reputation of eBay rookies for being impulsive non-paying bidders who don't read auction descriptions thoroughly.
For those new to eBay or nervous about buying a vehicle over the internet, that's understandable, but think about these stubborn facts for a moment. Note that I've been selling vintage 4x4's along with vintage parts on eBay for almost 18 years now. Some 15 years ago I happened to sell a vintage Bronco to an eBay seller who runs a large scale pawn shop in Philadelphia with over 100,000 feedbacks and he taught me this important eBay rule of thumb. Every positive feedback is worth about a dollar of trust. That means if you're buying something, say a special vintage carburetor for $300, then ideally the seller will have at least 300 positive feedbacks. This is just an ideal rule of thumb mind you. It's not a rule etched in stone but rather a simple guideline or compass for action. So if there's somebody's selling a $10,000 vehicle with only 32 feedbacks I'd be leery. Doesn't mean it's not legit, it's just that there's not much track record. By contrast if a seller's asking $10k for a vehicle and has more than 12k positive feedbacks like myself, well then you can rest easier for you can ask yourself why would they risk throwing away their whole business model, their decades old hard earned feedback reputation for only $10k? The answer is they wouldn't.
IMPORTANT AUCTION TERMS SO PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.Note that per eBay "Terms of Service" (TOS) that you agreed to when registering "your winning bid constitutes a legally binding contract for sale" so please don't start clicking if you're not completely serious and committed to buy, meaning, be sure you have wife's permission and funds in position to honor terms below. Please also make sure the phone number and address you have registered with eBay is current and if you're planning to use PayPal for the deposit that you have liquid funds ready to go that are not in the form of an E-Check which takes 5 or more days to clear, in other words, be a responsible bidder whose got their act together and doesn't have a bunch of amateur excuses after the fact. If for example you were a registered bidder at Barrett-Jackson auto auction in Scottsdale, Arizona and raised your paddle on a bid and won and then stiffed them they would promptly ruin your credit score as a non-paying bidder contract defaulter. We will attempt the same legal actions should you reneg on your commitment.
Inspection prior to bidding is welcome as vintage vehicles are always sold AS IS with no warranty expressed or implied.
PAYMENT TERMS:A non-refundable deposit of $1000 either viaonline PayPal payment orcard over phone through Square is due within 24 hours of auction close.
Full balance of Payment is due within 72 hours of auction close by either direct bank to bank wire transfer, or you can overnight envelope a Cashiers Check, or pay cash in person. PayPal for the full balance is not the preferred option, however a credit or debit card payment through Square.com is, so long as buyer is willing to pay the 3% fees.
Shipping:All shipping arrangements and costs are the responsibility of the buyer however we will always help your shipper coordinate the loading to the best of our ability. It all begins by calling the number above. Figure shipping any vehicle East of the Mississippi is about a grand. West is less. We will store the vehicle free for 21 days after sale. There is a $15 per day storage fee thereafter unless other arrangements are pre-dickered. Note that many naive rookie eBayers imagine that they'll jump on a plane to Tucson, pay in cash in person, and drive the truck home. In most cases that wrong. Not because the truck will have issues but rather because you won't get cheap airfare to Tucson, you won't have legal plates driving home, and the overall trip costs plus gas is way more than you think, and if you blow a radiator hose or get a flat in the middle of nowhere you'll realize none of that makes sense compared to the relatively low cost of shipping.
