The BJ44V is the hardtop medium wheelbase diesel version of the FJ40. In total the BJ44 is approximately 14” longer than a FJ40. The BJ44V was produced from 1980 until 1982. Which makes for a very short production run for the long running 40 series. Combine this rarity with the L-Package with which this truck is equipped and includes such items as the chrome bezel/grille, rear bumpers and license plate light covers, 15” painted wheels and original Zebra cloth interior with front buckets and center console with rear heat. Add in the original factory A/C and radio and the very pricey and rare factory electric winch and the result is one rare 40 series.
I bought this Land Cruiser in 2015 while on assignment in the Philippines for the US government. I purchased it from a collector who originally imported from Japan. Along with the restoration work it was professionally converted from right to left hand drive (left hand drive vehicle are not allowed in the P.I.). Since purchasing the vehicle I added a turbo kit for Turbo-Glide out of Australia (http://www.turboglide.com.au/turbo-kits/toyota/toyota-3b-landcruiser-turbo-kit-supply-fit/) The addition of the turbo made the vehicle a much more drivable vehicle. The stock set-ups in the older diesel have good power, but the acceleration was painfully slow. The Land Cruiser is a pleasure to drive and will comfortably cruise a 70mph. It should also be noted that the longer base on these rare models is noticeably smoother than an FJ40. In additional to the Turbo Kit, I added new 15" steel OEM rims, ARB Old Man Emu shocks and steering stabilizer, new injectors, batteries, headliner, chrome hubcaps, chrome grille bezel.
I really enjoy driving this Land Cruiser and it gets a lot of attention everywhere I go. I planned on keeping this LC for a long time, but unfortunately, I have not been able to get it registered here in California. It can be titled in any other state other than California. I have a Clean Title in my name and the EPA/DOT import papers. As a returning Foreign Service Officer, it was properly imported through my employer at the US State Department in 2017. The California DMV originally issued me a registration card and plates, but later told me I needed to have it brought current emission standards. So, sadly I must let her go.
Everything works as it should on the Land Cruiser with one exception. The heating system is all intact accept for the blower. Heaters are not needed on cars in the Philippines and so it was not installed after the conversion. The rear heater works fine and all the plumbing is correct.
This vehicle is sold “as is”, no warranty stated or implied. All required customs, EPA & DOT forms will be provided along with a bill of sale.
