1985 Toyota Celica GTS Convertible - A Rare Classic - White 5 Speed
1985 Toyota Celica GTS Description
1985 TOYOTA CELICA GTS CONVERTIBLE
Up for sale is my rare 1985 Toyota Celica GTS Convertible. It has a 2.4 L 22r engine with a 5 speed manual transmission. 207K miles on the OEM engine. If you know this car, then you know this Convertible was only made in sparse numbers in 1984 & 1985 (roughly 5,000). It was also the last RWD Celica Toyota would make.
I’ve owned the car for 10 years this month. It was a Colorado car when first sold. Purchased from a nice couple in Desert Hot Springs, CA in 2009.
For a 34 year old classic, all in all, it’s in excellent shape. Just about everything power works, save for the side view mirrors. The connecting tabs on the mirrors came loose, so the power controller won’t adjust them. Used Replacement side mirrors can be sourced pretty easily. In fact, I may have an extra set with a bunch of other spare parts I will include with the car’s sale.
Power 4 wheel disc brakes, power steering, power antenna. The power top works perfect, too. Power windows. The rear passenger quarter window will only go down 3/4 of the way, but I’m sure it can be adjusted and fixed to have full up and down action. AC works.
The top is not the original one. It was replaced by previous owner. The army green colored top is unusual! Black was the OEM color used. The green kind of grew on me, it was in good shape (still is), so I just left it alone.
Front seats were swapped from another 1985 GTS I had because they were in mint condition. The upholstery is all grey fabric front and rear, but the pattern is a little different between the two.
KYB sport gas struts/shocks all around. Stock springs. Momo leather steering wheel. For its age, the dashboard and interior trim are in very good shape.
K&N high-flow air filter. Magnaflow muffler with dual chrome tips. Has a nice little exhaust note without being too obnoxious. Otherwise, the car has been left stock. No engine mods whatsoever.
The body is super clean. It has one dent on the passenger side quarter panel. It can be easily fixed without too much work. The car has been garaged nearly the full 10 years I’ve owned it. Original Paint is in very good condition. It has your typical commercial car wash scratches, but that was from before me. I’ve only washed it at home. It has been clay barred, waxed and buffed out all the time with a Porter Cable polisher, and also by hand. For a pre-clear coat factoryToyota paint job, you won’t find many that look this good at 34 years of age.
Within the past 1-2 years, service with records: new Denso radiator, water pump, master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder. BF Goodrich TA tires. The 14x7 OEM aluminum alloy wheels were also professionally stripped and fully polished to a mirror-like chrome finish.
If you are looking for one of these cars to restore and enjoy, this one would be a great choice. With 110 hp, it's hardly a powerhouse! But it's a quick and nimble droptop cruiser, which hasalways run great and turned heads.
In 2019, there are not many of these flare-fendered GTS cars still on the road -- when you see one in good shape, it tends to get noticed.
Here are several things the car will need:
A new ignition coil. Mine gave up the ghost few months ago after parking at Zuma Beach in Malibu. I just haven’t had time to replace it. It’s an inexpensive fix. The car is not running because it simply needs the new igniter/coil installed. The battery is fine, as I have it on a Battery Tender charger, which keeps it fully charged.
Rack & Pinion steering unit. Need a new one. Old one is leaky and loose. Still works, but it’s definitely time for an upgraded one.
Timing Chain. With these bulletproof 22r/re motors, the timing chains will eventually skip a tooth or two over time. That's the case with this car. For the past 4-5 years, as a result of the timing chain being old, timing has been advanced. Car has always still run great, without any issue, but because the timing is out of spec & advanced, it can be an issue with CA smog testing. I have simply smogged it with a little side help from a friendly shop. 2017 was the last smog and registration. I did not register it for 2018.
This is such a great, fun, unique classic Toyota. I really wish I could keep it, but my garage space is full with other Lexus and Toyotas. I hope another Toyota enthusiast will buy it and enjoy it as much as I have over the past decade.
