1987 Toyota Land Cruiser GX Description

This is a project, rusty and hit by a taxi that ran a red light in SF (left front fender). This has been my third LC wagon, I organized it to travel and live out of for 4+ weeks at a time in remote Baja California. It’s 24V Canadian market truck with a secondary house battery system fed by the alternator or a solar array (not included). The system has a floating point solar charge controller, 24V–12V battery charger from an ambulance, and a switch to control alternator input to the house system. Other additions:

• ARB front bumper, no longer available for 60 series Cruisers but does need repair (kept the taxi out of the engine bay though, it was destroyed)

•1” lift (maybe 1.5”? Lifted for 33” tires anyway.)

• Rear bumper with carrier for three jerry cans, not installed but I’ll put it on before it goes.

• Safari Snorkel with elevated air intake.

•Smitty-Bilt rack.

• Locking steel drawers under each front seat.

• Rear cargo and passenger area built out with platform for storage beneath (I used military surplus hospital blanket bags to save weight and be able to take stuff out of the car and not have it stuck in drawers and a Hardig case for the kitchen stuff — these aren’t for sale) and a roll-out platform to hold a large Engel cooler (also not for sale) that was used as a non-refrigerated pantry.

• Receptacle and spot for pull-out tray holding Engel reefer with TwoZone upper compartment, tall! (Reefer not included and not for sale.)

• Viar 24V compressor mounted in the cargo area to air up/ fill tires.

• Two rear accessory receptacles at left tailgate, one 24V fed by alternator for compressor, one 12V by house system for whatever.

•Optima Yellowtop deep cycle vehicle batteries are good, house battery I don’t know about… it’s also an Optima Yellow.

• Custom tailgate storage I made to hold hatchet, jerry can nozzle, and other dirty stuff.

• Welded stud for locking toolbox into right cargo area, aluminum diamond plate box not included.

•Hi-Lift jack (and ARB bumper mount) mounted to front bumper.

• Tool box for tire tools, etc mounted inside ARB bumper.

• Wagon Gear heavy replacement door gaskets to cut noise and dust.

• Stock console removed for Tuffy Box console, not included (but we have a brand new one for sale, see Ebay auction223763862188).

• New head with all new components (pre-cups, etc) in ’06, new 24v alternator in ’16. Bottom end needs attention, at the least side cover oil leak fix.

• Probably stuff I’m forgetting…. certainly misc. parts and odd accessories, buyer will get a box or two. I organized this for comfortable remote long-distance travel and it was great.

The truck has a 2H naturally aspirated motor, an H55 5-speed transmission, with current California DMV registration; the DMV is no longer allowing the importation of older diesel vehicles into CA. I’ve owned it for more than 13 years and registration has never been a problem but past experience there is no guarantee of future performance with the DMV.

It has 580,590kms on it.It is slow and steady, gets reasonable fuel economy (18-20mph on hwy) for a Land Cruiser, and could see glory days again. A buyer will need to have time, skills, and patience to bring this truck back to where it was, let alone the ridiculous prices these command today.

I’m moving someplace where a truck like this isn’t particularly useful and instead of a rehab it’s going, cheap. Starts strong and drives well especially for its age! It is sold as-is, where-is. I can coordinate to meet with a shipper if you choose to ship it but all arrangements must be made with the shipper directly, I’ll just hand over the keys. Remember, it’s a project! It got me to some great surf, all over the Sierras, and the CA desert, it should do the same for someone else.
